Triple Q Questions is a privately owned business that supplies scholar bowl questions to schools. We provide customized sets of questions in various formats to meet the needs of individual competitions. We wish to update and improve our database so that we can provide better service to our customers and keep our materials up to date. The current database contains over 40,000 questions that are categorized according to both grade level and subject. The questions may be elementary, junior varsity, or varsity level. Each question is categorized according to 5 main subject areas – math, science, social science, literature/language arts, and potpourri. Within each subject area, there are multiple subcategories. For example, a math question may be classified as algebra, general math, geometry, calculus, trigonometry, or statistics. Each subject has multiple subcategories. When an order is received, a list of the schools that will use the questions is input into the database and “selected” to indicate that these schools are the ones you will be working with. The database is supposed to automatically lock out any questions the schools have previously had so that no school will receive the same question for a period of five years. It is also supposed to allow us to indicate that we need 5 various math questions, 3 American history questions, 2 government questions, etc. However, this function of our database has failed. We can “pull” a group of questions, but cannot assign what type of questions we need. Once a packet of questions is generated, it needs to be “labeled” so that it can be retrieved at a later date. Currently, each packet is assigned a packet number. What we need is to develop a new database that will allow us to continue to generate custom question sets in a more timely matter and that will give us the ability to search both the questions and the answers using key words so that we do not end up with duplicate questions in the database. Listed below is some general information concerning this project. Question Levels Elementary – grades 4-6 Junior Varsity – grades 7-9 Varsity – grades 10-12 Question Types Tossup questions – single answer questions Bonus questions – multiple part questions (may be two, three, four, or five parts) Rapid fire questions – 11 part short answer questions Worksheets – 20 short answer questions Subjects and subcategories Math – General math, Algebra, Geometry, Calculus, Statistics, Trigonometry Science – Anatomy, Astronomy, Biology, Botany, Chemistry, Computer Science, Earth Science, Physics Social Science – American History, Ancient History, Current Events, Government, US Geography, World Geography, World History Literature/Language Arts – Drama, Grammar, Languages, Literature, Novels, Poetry, Short Stories, Spelling, Vocabulary Potpourri – Anthropology, Art, Cinema, Dance, Education, General Knowledge, Logic, Music, Mythology, Philosophy, Psychology, Religion/Bible, Sociology, Sports/Games, Television, Theater, Vocational Schools School name with town and city (street address when available) Possible improvements to the database Some schools require bonus questions with a specific number of parts. Currently, there is no way to use 2 parts of a 4-part question and save the other two parts for later use by that school. Need to be able to generate questions by subject. Some schools will order 200 current events questions or 150 math questions. Customization is a large part of our business. If a customer wants 25 tossup questions with 25 bonus questions, and they want each bonus question to follow the tossup question, we currently have to cut and paste. It would be nice if the database could generate this format. Sometimes a school will want 50 single answer questions, but every other one is labeled as a bonus question. It would be nice if this format could be incorporated into the database. When a set of questions is generated, it needs to be in Word format with our heading on it.
