In my business I often have lists of words that I need to look up in various online dictionaries (usually 3: Merriam-Webster.com, Dictionary.com, and ForVO.com). I waste a lot of time cutting and pasting words from Excel into these sites and then cutting and pasting the phonetic pronunciations back into Excel (and oftentimes the words aren’t even in the dictionaries).
In a nutshell, I would love a tool built to automatically pull the phonetic pronunciations for me, if they exist. I’m not sure of the best program or scripting for this: AutoHotKey or another language that could live on one of my websites and then be exported. This could also be done entirely in Excel if it’s possible. Most of these sites also have APIs that could be used if it makes more sense than scraping.
- Online form/tool that could live on a page on my website (Wordpress on BlueHost).
- Import and/or paste list of words or terms.
- Ability to choose which dictionaries to check, all or only some.
- Pull a link to the word in the corresponding dictionary, copy phonetic pronunciation (keeping proper formatting), and indicate somehow if an entry does not exist.
- Provide exportable CSV.
Conversing over Skype would be ideal as well to nail down details.
