We are looking for a GIS technician to create highly-detailed shapefiles of 29 atolls and 5 small isolated islands. The specific features to be digitized for each are land area, sandy/beach area, man-made structures (houses, airstrips, etc.), and several reef classes defined by relative depth and specifically the color they appear on imagery. The data should be digitized on-screen using up-to-date high resolution satellite imagery that we will provide. It is essential that the data are created in a consistent manner across atolls/islands, and that the results are detailed, topologically correct, and visually pleasing. The data also needs to be submitted in a timely manner. We would agree on the specific timeline, but in general this should not exceed a week per island/atoll (so our maximum is some 34 weeks for the complete job). Payments would be made weekly, per milestone (1 milestone = 1 completed atoll/island).
We will only consider freelancers with previous GIS work experience, extensive experience with on-screen digitizing, and proficiency with ESRI ArcGIS software or QGIS. A work record of consistent reliability, accuracy & attention to detail is a must.
Software/ network requirements: You can use any GIS software that allows creation of shapefiles but preferably ArcGIS or QGIS. You will need a relatively fast internet connection in order to download large imagery datasets that we will provide.
Finally, we would like to see samples of work, ideally something that you digitized on-screen from imagery.
Note: All places we need to have digitized belong to the Republic of the Marshall Islands. These atolls/islands range in size from large and complex ones such as Kwajalein Atoll, to small and simpler ones such as Mejit Island. We prefer that we agree on a per atoll/island flat fee and consider each place a separate milestone with an identical fee. The free can be a sort of average, so that any extra work that may need to go into larger places would be offset by the smaller amount of work that is required for smaller places.
