/// OVERVIEW ///
Hello all, my name is Raleigh Drigo, and I thank you so much for spending the time to check out my job posting. I am a singer-songwriter from the USA, and I am looking to team up with an arranger who can enrich my songs with some instrumentation.
/// WHO I'M LOOKING FOR ///
My ideal candidate is an artist who is drawn to my songs for one reason or another. I know my production value is terrible, but I am looking for someone who can see past my current shortcomings, and be inspired by the potential that lies within my songs. I am looking for someone who is inspired to enhance a song with colorful arrangements, and who gives every job 100% of their talents. Not only should you be superb at arranging "pop" songs, but you might also have some understanding of being a producer, so as to pull out the best of the song. If you have a vision of the sonic landscape of the piece, that would be great, too. I am also looking for someone who is inspired by my songs, and who can then work from their own inspiration to fulfill the song's horizontal calling. I am not looking for technical skills, I am looking to collaborate with an artist.
/// MY VISION ///
If I had to describe my vision for how my songs would be arranged it would be: light, acoustic, reedy, spacey, airy, animated and minimalist. I'd like the guitar and vocals to be the central elements of every song, and the arrangements only to enhance the ideas that are already established from the acoustic guitar and vocals. The arrangements can be colorful, but should at the same time remain close to the vision of the song. I am looking for more of a live-acoustic-performance sound rather than a polished, heavily compressed studio sound. Unless you have a strong vision for it, my goal is to only use acoustic instruments initially (that is, I'd like the arrangement to only include acoustic instruments), though, if you have a strong hunch towards an electronic sound or instrument, I wouldn't be opposed to it either.
/// MY INSPIRATION ///
I really love all types of music, but I would have to say my strongest influence comes by way of Paul Simon. I draw inspiration from the following artists: Regina Spektor, Andrew Bird, Sufjan Stevens, Tom Waits, Bob Dylan and Fiona Apple.
/// A FEW NOTES ///
After these arrangements are complete, I'm going to record these songs in a professional manner. I might rent studio time or do it from home... I'm still undecided. But if I do the latter, I would be seeking out a producer / mixer as well.
I'd like these arrangements to be ready to play live, so that if I have a small ensemble accompanying me, all I'd have to do is print the sheet music from these arrangements.
/// MY SONGS ///
Many of the songs on my channel are very old now (2-3 years+), but you are welcome to browse my channel if you want. Here are some more recent songs I've done:
"Loved You From The Start"
"Suspense of Two Bodies:
"Rainbow in a Gutter"
Just a few days ago, I put up 4 new songs and I'll be putting up 4 new songs (hopefully) before the end of April / early May.
/// FINAL THOUGHTS ///
Like I said, my production quality is very low. But I need my arranger to look past this and see the potential inherent in these songs; ideally, to see the artistry that is waiting to be enhanced and enriched by YOUR hand. I put these songs on YouTube only because I like having an online resume of my work, and also so I don't forget them! But anyways, please don't bother applying if you don't like my songs.
/// CHALLENGE ///
Hey X, thanks so much for applying to this job.
The response I've gotten so far is fantastic. But because I've gotten so many applications, I am going to hold all applicants to the "challenge" that I alluded to in the job description. So, I wanted to give you a few more guidelines on the "challenge" section of this application. So here they are:
/// CHALLENGE ///
You can choose any song of mine you prefer.
Please arrange a section of the song to the best of your own artistic ability. Instrumentation is completely up to you. Let your own artistry guide you. To be honest, I know that the lack of professionalism in my own recording might be a bit of a hindrance, but do your best.
I am not asking you for finalized work, just give me a taste of your art. Maybe a verse or two? It's up to you. Spend maybe an hour at most? Even if it's just a budding concept, I will know a good arrangement when I hear it. Even if it's just 10 to 15 seconds of the song, I'll be able to hear your vision, and whether or not it complements my own.
Submissions must be made by next Monday May 2nd, 2016. Please send your work to my email address: firstname.lastname@example.org
