Task: Write between 2 and 3 breaking news stories per day, (M-F) in the oil and gas sector.
MUST HAVE AN UNDERSTANDING OF THE OIL AND GAS SECTOR. There really isn't room for a learning curve on this one.
This would be 300-word articles based on breaking news only (no analysis required, no unique angle). The stories are to be based on just-published news (from press releases, small regional publications, and large players such as Reutors/Bloomberg)--although the idea is to get it in before the bigger players get it.
No spinning is allowed, although some content from company press releases may be re-used. Hyperlinks required to source information where appropriate.
This is a two-week assignment only (at this point), as a test. Longer term, this is an ongoing assignment for the right person.
For two weeks, the chosen candidates (2) will submit 2 or three articles every day between the hours of 8:00am EST and 5:00pm EST for news that broke over the last 8-10 hours. No old news will be included (if it's Tuesday, and an event happened Friday--it's too late), and nothing that is not actually news (like analysis pieces, opinion pieces, or pieces that discuss mere probable events). We are talking about actual events.
For the foreseeable future, topics will be assigned right before, or during the specified writing hours listed above. Longer term, we may migrate toward having writers cover a specific beat and choose their own topics. We're still ironing this out.
Headlines and leads are CRITICAL--must be catchy.
So the key points are:
1. 300 words each
2. killer headline - two choices
3. straight news (no analysis; these are just straight-up news briefs)
4. should be ''breaking news''. This means that if something is huge, like a big move in the markets and it's already on Reuters, that's ok, but the bulk of stories should be things that haven't made it onto the mainstream wires yet.
5. types of news we are looking for:
a. major geopolitical incidents (ISIS just bombed an import terminal in Libya)
b. major oil spill, refinery fire, or similar
c. supermajor oil company news (breaking) (Shell announces plan to sell $30bn in assets)
d. oil rig count annoucements
f. refinery/pipeline closures
I can send you samples if you have questions.
Please bid on 2 or 3 stories per day for two weeks (a total of 20 or 30 stories--please specify which you are bidding on.) Please do not send a bid per story.
Articles, which will be published on a major energy news sector website, will include your byline if you so desire.
Budget is estimate and obviously varies by number of pieces/quality of writing (i.e. how much time I will need to spend editing the pieces).
