I'm looking to hire a freelance editor or copywriter to work closely with Optimizely's Customer Education team. We aim to have best-in-class software documentation (help.optimizely.com).
What I have in mind:
Currently, a team of technical contributors, mostly support engineers and product managers, document our software. They write a range of materials -- from short FAQs to long QA articles to feature documentation for our knowledge base. I take all drafts through a round or two of edits and revisions, with focus on clarity, readability, comprehensiveness, structure, and adherence to our style guide. I'd like to hire a freelance editor to help me with this work.
Have an ear for voice and tone, and can modulate based on different contexts
Focus on audience when editing, and can make revisions based on what's helpful for that audience
Have a clear, concise style
Strong grasp of grammar (and North American business English)
Are comfortable familiarizing yourself with Optimizely's software
Don't need to be very technical at all, but must be comfortable with editing technical content and able to fill in the blanks based on context, on occasion
The work you'd do:
Edit for clarity, comprehensiveness, readability, and structure
Help maintain or raise the quality and consistency of our documentation
Apply our style guide (it's not particularly strict; rather, it aims to provide consistent terminology and establish voice and tone)
The volume of work would be low at first, maybe 1-2 pieces per week. However, there's a distinct possibility that it will increase in the next 2-4 months.
