Who is WeTeach looking for?
WeTeach is looking for current or retired teachers, who hold higher education qualifications and would like to share their wealth of experience with Chinese children through accompanying them reading classic children’s books online.
WeTeach is a social enterprise that matches experienced and caring teachers (many of our teachers are retired) with Chinese primary school students. WeTeach aims to help Chinese primary school students improve their command of English, pronunciation, and cultural understanding through accompanying them reading classic children’s books. These “read along” classes are delivered over Skype to China.
The experience and qualifications WeTeach is looking for in its teachers:
University level qualifications in education from Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, the United States, or Canada; Teaching experience; and
a passion to help children reach their potential.
Explanation of Chinese name:
WeTeach's Chinese name, 亦友, pronounced yiyou in Chinese, comes from the Chinese adage 亦师亦友, yishiyiyou, which translates as “someone who is a teacher, and also a friend”. We hope that through WeTeach Chinese students not only learn English but develop a positive view of the English speaking world. We also hope that through WeTeach our teachers learn more about China and Chinese culture.
WeTeach provides flexible hours, however teachers should be available at least 2 evenings a week for a 1-hour period between the hours of 18:00 – 21:00 AWST (Australian Western Standard Time). Each class is 25 minutes in length, and we would aim for each teacher having at least two students.
In general teachers will receive an hourly rate of AUD $24 from the Chinese students’ parents.
Technical and Administrative Requirements
Teachers only need to have access to broadband internet and a PC. All classes are taught online. WeTeach provides each of its teachers with all curriculum, training, linguistic and technical support to teach comfortably without any barriers.
