I have created a non-linear constrained optimisation algorithm in excel to solve a finance problem. However, excel and the various plug-ins I have used are extremely inefficient. I now want help to write the algorithm in a more efficient language/program. The idea would be that I can understand and use the finished product. A brief description of the algorithm: There is a simple objective function/equation that needs to be maximised. There are 100 input variables which are weightings of stocks that make up a portfolio. The objective function is quadratic with respect to these inputs. There are a number of constraints placed on the model that must be satisfied for the maximised objective function (again, some are non-linear). There is also a very large dataset that feeds into the objective functions and constraints - these are mostly exogenous however there is a 100x100 matrix multiplication that can make the computation slow. We are looking for an individual with the capabilities to apply Machine Learning techniques in order to more accurately predict future staffing levels. A set of variables has been largely established and we are looking for an analysis executed using them. I'm looking for an experienced data scientist who has had some experience working on process optimisation (engineering related) problems. My data set is from a power plant desulphurisation process which has approx. 100,000 observations and 30 variables. Using this data set, I would like to model the number pumps used in the process with respect to the other variables. Then based on the derived model, you would need to find the optimal solution at which the number of pumps used is minimised subject to a few inequality constraints. This is an interesting problem and I'm confident that whoever takes on this challenge will find it rewarding! I would need the code written in R. Also, practical experience in Machine Learning and Nonlinear Programming would be required. If selected for an interview, further details about the project/expectation will be provided.
