We are designing some playful learning activities for children in schools. Groups of 8 kids will be able to participate.
We require a floor mat, of approximately 3 metres by 3 metres. The mat contains a matrix of conductive pads, 4 x 4. All of the conductive pads are connected to a small microcontroller (such as Arduino). Each pad will be small (maximum 3cm x 3cm).
The microcontroller will be powered by a small battery and will connect to the PC via Bluetooth or USB. The The microcontroller does not need to be embedded within the mat, as long as the user can connect it easily through some interface.
When a child touches a conductive pad, it will be detected using Capacitive Sensors, and interpreted by computer. We will create games based on this mode of interaction.
Your task is to brainstorm ideas for the design of this mat and the choice of materials.
The electronics/microcontroller design or how Cap Sense works is not your concern. Only that we will require conductive pads (fabric or copper plates) to be embedded in the mat, or to be somehow well hidden, and how they will connect to the microcontroller.
Please note that Capacitive Sensing, does not require direct contact with the conductor, so the conductive pads can be completely hidden from view, embedded within the material, or underneath..
You are bidding to work on creating a concept document. This will be a short document, that includes:
* Approximate Sketches (just to show your ideas)
* Choice of materials for the different parts
* How you will connect the pads to the microcontroller
* How will you position the microcontroller
* The mat must be portable. So it must be possible to roll it up or fold.
* The mat must adhere well to the floor and not slip
* The weight must be kept to a minimum to reduce the cost of logistics
For the right candidate this document should not take too much time, but it must show an awareness about how a product such as this can be manufactured at scale.
Once we are happy with the concept document we will need you to fully develop the product such that we can produce prototypes that we can test in schools, before producing them on a large scale. But this will happen as part of a separate Upwork job.
