We are a very early educational technology platform with a fully functional mobile and web app already used by paying clients. We know what we're building and where we want to go with the technology. What we've never had is a designer. Our website is basic and ugly, our mobile app is very functional but also very raw, our web app is even further behind than that. On top of that we're in the very early stages of defining our branding--color, logos, style, typography etc. We're looking for a talented hungry designer who can think strategically about user experience AND pretty pixels. Initial work would likely focus on helping us refine the brand design elements along with a front-end website redesign (with conversion goals front and center) and a re-design of our web-app experience. The next set of work would focus purely on the mobile app UX/UI. To be transparent, we're looking for long term collaboration as we grow the business. We don't really view this as a one-off project. We have a preference for a really hungry, motivated designer with something to prove. So if you want your work to actually show up in technology people are using, and you're flexible on accomplishing that goal, then we'd love to talk. In terms of pricing we probably prefer a fixed per-project model, but we're flexible there.

Hi, Thank you for taking the time to read about this job. I am sorry that it is a long explanation but this is necessary in order for us to prescreen applicants and not waste months going through unqualified workers. Knowing what we expect before you apply with be good for both you and us not to waste time. Please read this ENTIRE job description and follow the directions carefully when applying so that you will be considered for the job. Pleas note: If you do not follow the simple directions then you will be disqualified. This is because unfortunately that is part of our screening process. The position is for a website designer who is an expert at designing website template and page layouts in Photoshop. We are looking for someone who is qualified and experienced in both User Interface Design, and User Experience Design (or UI and UX) for short. Those two obviously go hand in hand. You need to understand "mobile friendliness" in the design and be able to design pages that will work across device platforms. Over 50% of all website traffic on the internet is now on a mobile device. Therefore every single website we build for clients must be mobile friendly and provide a good user experience for people on mobile devices. At times this may require to build 2 different versions of the same pages or sites that will be delivered up to the user depending on the device they are on. The person we are looking for should be able to design new or existing old websites to come up with new concepts for re-designing the pages and/or entire website from start to finish. Again this could include ALL the existing pages on the old sites or just some of them. You will be coordinating with the project manager (which is me) on which pages we will be keeping and which ones we won't. Also you will need to coordinate on any content we will be removing and/or adding. This is all part of the overall marketing plan we formulate for our clients. So the user interface will need to be designed in accordance with the purpose of the content on the pages, both to improve users experience, and to optimize conversion on the websites. The person we hire should have a good understanding of all that was just described above. The payment we provide will be as follows: For now we do not pay hourly. We pay you as a contractor for a fixed price. You give us a bid on how much you think the particular job should cost and how long it will take for you to finish the jobs. If we accept your bid this will lead to ongoing work and a more long term working relationship (with increased pay over time as you become a more trusted and valued member of the virtual team). What we expect of you as a freelancer: Please keep in mind that YOU MUST keep up with deadlines and the agreed upon time frames for reaching milestones and finishing projects. We cannot tolerate freelancers working for multiple clients at a time and not viewing the jobs we give you as a priority. If you take on a job then we expect for you to finish it within a reasonable time frame that you agreed on. If we didn't have this requirement it could cause us to lose all our clients. We have had a lot of trouble with this in the past and so have learned to screen applicants for their availability to work on projects. If you only have one hour a day to work on a project then please don't apply. We also expect REGULAR communication with you and updates on the progress of the projects we give you. If we ask for an update or have a question we can not allow freelancers ignoring us for days at a time. As the project manager I have a responsibility to our clients to finish the projects within the time frames that we contracted with them to do so. If we have freelancers working on a part of the project and they then decide to disappear for a week (with no reports on the progress of the work) then we have no idea when we will be able to finish the project as whole. If that happens we won't have any accurate updates for our clients that the projects are for. Also this can mess up coordination with other workers or freelancers who we hire to finish other parts of the projects. You must communicate with us WITHIN THE DAY WE REACH OUT TO YOU. We are not going to bug you all day long. We will only contact you when it is absolutely necessary to keep the progress of the project running smooth and on time. So to recap: 1. You must have the skills we are looking for. 2. You must be willing to work per project for a fixed price. 3. You must keep deadlines and reach milestones on time. 4. You must communicate with us and not disappear for days at a time. If you feel like you meet these qualifications then please send a cover letter answering the five questions down below. If you have gotten this far in reading all this then congratulations! Their is a high chance you are qualified. Thank you for taking the time to read it all. I look forward to hearing from you.
