Please, only apply if you have many years of experience in hard drive data recovery attempts, and consider yourself at expert level.
I have 2 drives needing different data recoveries.
1) Main HD from a laptop: computer crashed and failed to resart. Startup repair was attempted (with os disc that was also win 7 ultimate, but may not have been the actual disc installed from) and after I left it working on that all night I gave up and force quit to attempt data removal by connecting drive to another system externally. Drive now identifies as un-formatted.
2) External Desktop backup drive: Some months ago I had a problem with another laptop which was mis-identifying external drives as needing to be scanned and repaired. When repair was allowed, contents were disturbed. In 2 cases, thumb drives contents were corrupted, and in the case to be worked on here, this external backup drive had access to an important top level folder disrupted. Now when drive contents are viewed, folder appears missing. When all folders appearing as contents of the drive are selected (with hidden and protected files set to display), properties show combined size to be 1.14tb. When the drive is viewed in the drive list at top level of "my computer", drive size shows 149gb free of 1.81tb (or total of about 1.6tb), which should be the correct total size if the apparently missing folder is accounted for as though still present. This would seem to indicate that the directory at least still remembers the size the folder occupied. Nothing has been written to this drive since then, I hope data from missing folder can be recovered. I/O errors appear to be indicated.
