You are interested in the factors that affect the recognition of target syllables when they are embedded in different words. In particular you believe that the type of word can interfere with perceptual processes normally associated with visual search. To conduct your study you examined the number of errors made by individuals when they were required to rapidly locate a target syllable. The independent variable that you manipulated was the type of word in which the target was embedded (familiar, unfamiliar and nonsense). The data you collected can be found in the “nonsense_syllables.sav” data file.
TASK: The draft you submit will have your answers to the following questions:
1. Run a factorial ANOVA to determine if there is an effect of sex and/or education on the number of errors made when the target syllable is embedded in a nonsense syllable. Fully describe the results of your analysis and use graphs and/or plots as necessary.
2. Run a mixed-design ANOVA (Repeated measures with 2 between-subjects factors) to determine if sex and/or education have an effect on the number of errors made when the target syllable is embedded in a familiar, unfamiliar or nonsense word and also whether the number of errors are affected by the word type. Fully describe the results of your analysis and use graphs and/or plots as necessary.
3. Compare the results from your factorial ANOVA (#1) with the mixed-design ANOVA (#2). Which provides more meaningful information? Why? Do any values or effects change as a result of the test that was chosen? If so, why?
