Navigation technologies we are interested should use a combination of sensor data to achieve the most accurate results. These approaches combine inertial sensor data i.e. gyro, accelerometer and compass measurements while filtering noise to get better results.
Other techniques to determine a users position should include cellular network based positioning (for example based on GSM), positioning methods based on signal strength measurements of wireless local area networks (for example Wi-Fi), Bluetooth-based positioning (using Bluetooth Low Energy transmitters or BTLE) and proximity sensing based on RFID tags.
