I am looking for freelancers with the lowest rates

I plan to produce a full-color picture book (blurb below).  This oDesk job is to create 3-4 initial illustrations to use in my crowd-sourcing campaign to fund the book’s production costs.  I need color illustrations for:
• 2-3 character sketches (1-2 tooth fairies and the evil Plaque Man)
• one key scene from the story

I’m seeking rich, multi-layered colors and detailed drawings.  Maurice Sendak and Jan Brett are good examples of what I like.  I have found some ‘ideal’ samples online and can share those, too. Of course, I wouldn’t want or expect the artist I work with to copy somebody else’s style; I just need to find somebody on the same page as my vision, creatively speaking.  I also am open to considering a style of art suggested by the artist once he/she studies my story and characters.

I do not know if an hourly rate or set price is best. Perhaps learning more about how you work will help make this decision a good one for both of us. If our creative collaboration seems to work, I’d happily continue with more work-for-hire illustrations to complete the book after my fundraising campaign.

The book’s working title is ‘The Tooth Fairy Conference.’  Here’s a draft of the elevator speech for PR:  In this minty-fresh picture book, Gwyneth & a cheeky gaggle of tooth fairies glean economic facts & dental fortitude to defeat a rot-minded foe, Plaque Man. Toddlers, gap-toothed kids, and maybe a few tweens will like the story’s mash-up of classic fairy lore and modern details.  They will sink their teeth into mouthfuls of silly (yet relevant) puns, healthy facts, zippy characters, and a good-trumps-evil ending. Adults will appreciate the playful emphasis on knowledge-driven problem solving, personal accountability, team work, and decisive action. And by the time our fairyland heroes floss & toss the slimy-grimy Plaque Man, all our readers will have gained some pearly white economic insight.

This strange combo of themes is intentional. I’m pretty passionate about integrating thinking & learning across the curriculum in ways that are attention-getting, quirky, and fun. I also think everyone needs to learn some basics of economic thinking (not just ‘consumer math’) when they’re young.
