Tag size: 30mm x 50mm
Tag thickness: 1mm (1.5 or 2.0mm if need be)
Tag material: Aluminum or Stainless Steel
Each tag will have a 4mm hole punched at the top
There are three drawings:
1. Hinge design (bump and bumpless design)
2. Comb design
3. Spiral design
Tags are flat pieces of metal with smooth surfaces on both sides. If you look on the web, you will find Dog Tag Lockets. These are products that allow a photo to be inserted into a groove on the inside of the tag. The product I am developing IS NOT similar to normal Dog Tag Lockets. Instead, as noted, my product is simple a flat, smooth surface on both sides of the two joined dog tags. With that said, my dog tag locket is two dog tags that are joined together. As noted by the three designs, the two tags are joined by either a hinged, comb or spiral.
My Dog Tag Locket will be printed on, all surfaces, using a unique printing process. The tag needs to lay flat for printing to occur. By their design, hinges
are not flat (ie, think of a door hinge). Using a traditional hinge design where metal flanges wrap around a hinge pin (creates a hinge bump), using such a design to join the two dog tags together, when the joined tags are laying inside facing down on a table, would show the hinge "bump" on the backside.
While it is possible to design a hinge in such a way as to not create a hinge " bump," such is a little more complicated. Given the thiness of the material, it may not be possible to create a hinge that when opened does not have a bump.
With all that said, please provide both a hinge bump design and a hinge bumpless design.
The other two design mentioned are designs for attaching the two tags together after printing. The comb design is best illustrated by watching this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n1b5OPCOJvM
In a nutshell, the comb design using a flexible material (plastic or metal) that that has recoil properties. As you will see on the drawings, the tag has extended inside edges with slots holes that will allow the comb binding flanges to pass-through.
The spiral is similar to a note book.
The latter two designs allow for the tag to lay complete flat for printing and then assembled after printing. While assembling after printing may be time consuming, this may be the chosen method, if the spiral or comb bindings create a good looking finished product.
Ideally, a flat "bumpless" hinge or "hidden" hinge would be ideal. It would lay flat for printing and would be preassembed.
Another idea is to create a hinge type device that is a separate product that in some unique way allows for the printed tags to securely slide into without sliding out.
Keep It Simple
In the end, using a traditional hinge design may be the best design. If so, then I will have to adjust the printing process to use that design.
I have attached two designs from two different manufacturers. One shows what appears to be a traditional hinge (image is cut and pasted) and another shows what might be a "flat hinge" design. Hard to tell if the design will really work.
Please review and bid out cost for developing hinge design first. I would like to review design concepts around the hinge design first as it is requires no post assemble cost.
If you can develop a concept whereby the hinge is a separate unit from the tags and after printing the hinge and tags are attached, then that too is worth considering as well.

Set 2 is a cut and paste job...showing a hinge joining the two tags.
Set 3 looks very interesting if it can actually be done. Hinge looks like a flat design.
