I was introduced to the world wide web in 1996 when the new technology was presented to a gathering of media and marketing professionals in Hong Kong. Its potential as a marketing medium was immediately apparent and it was not long before I was working with a designer to get a company website online. Soon after that in 1997 I became Director of Communications for a hotel group in Thailand. Prior to my arrival they had commissioned a very expensive corporate website. Though it looked beautiful, it got no visitors at all. My research into the site's lack of traffic was my introduction to SEO. I discovered that some web designers are only too happy to take your money to create a very pretty website without including even the most rudimentary elements of search engine optimisation. In my experience, even today, more than twelve years later, not much has changed in that regard. In 1999 I joined a start-up internet company as Director of Content. It went from strength to strength and within its first year had already garnered millions of dollars in angel investment from Sweden and Australia. At the time, my boss gave my work on content development a good deal of credit for attracting the investors. Since 2000 I have run my own websites and blogs and enjoy doing the seo and social marketing for them. However as I mostly work alone on my own websites I sometimes miss the excitement of collaborating on big projects. More than that though, I love doing SEO and website content work.
