In spite of Upwork's policy, please know that as a busy writer I often lack the time to respond to all the invitations I receive. Because of this, I have received a "non-responsive" status. Although I have attempted to get Upwork to assume that a non-response is a "not interested" status, my requests thus far have failed. Thus, I feel it important to make this disclaimer up-front...I certainly DO respond to projects when I am free from other obligations. (My only alternative is to mark myself "unavailable," which is counter-productive to accepting legitimate work). Now, on to information about me: As a semi-retired citizen, I decided to refine my latent writing skills. Toward that end, I spend a great deal of time researching in order to deliver knowledgeable content and/or accurate product descriptions. It is for that reason that I generally do not accept assignments that pay less than .04 cents per word. Since I am semi-retired, I especially appreciate clients who need two to four articles weekly for their website or blog. As a website designer, I believe content and presentation are paramount. My websites continually evolve to include the best old and new-style components.

    United States - Last active: 4 months ago - Tests: 2 - Portfolio: 10

VIDEO | AUDIO | GRAPHIC DESIGN | WEBSITE DESIGN | SEARCH ENGINE OPTIMIZATION | SOCIAL MEDIA | PHOTOGRAPHY | DRAFTING WEBSITE: VIDEO PORTFOLIO: ORIGINAL MUISC PORTFOLIO: ABOUT Tom has a background in: television, feature films, emerging technologies, marketing and business development. In 1991, Tom discovered Northeastern's television studio while studying Communication at Northeastern University. Adding a concentration in television and film to his studies, Tom spent many days (and nights) mastering all the equipment in the studio. Late in 1991, the studio installed an Avid Media Composer digital editing system, a brand new technology. Tom immediately saw it as the future and became proficient with the system. Over the next two years Avid took the video world by storm. Referred and championed by his Northeastern professor's Tom was hired by Reebok (freelance) to assist and train the in-house video department on the Avid editing system. Reebok was gearing up for the Super Bowl XXVI launch of the tragically flawed, "Dan vs. Dave" multi-million dollar advertising campaign. The campaign was designed to generate buzz between two American decathletes: Dan O'Brien and Dave Johnson - for the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona. Both were considered "sure locks" for gold and silver medals. The campaign took a tragic turn when Dan failed to qualify for the games. It was a great learning experience for a young college student. Tom also realized the corporate world was not for him. In 1993, again referred by his professor's, Tom was hired by an independent production company to apply his skills with the Avid Media Composer for a PBS documentary. By the time the documentary was finished Tom was also responsible for field sound recording and he composed the music for the production. The documentary - Sex Education In America: AIDS and Adolescence - received critical acclaim after a congressional viewing with the Surgeon General of the United States of America. In 1994, Tom moved to Los Angeles to join a start-up Avid editing system provider for feature films. This was at the dawn of the digital editing era when Hollywood made the move from traditional film-based editing to digital editing. Tom spent countless hours in the cutting rooms (editing rooms) supporting the systems and working with many Academy Award winning, producers, directors and editors. Some of the films Tom worked on include: As Good As It Gets, Jackie Brown, Mulholland Drive, Titanic and Waiting for Guffman. In 1999, Tom founded Orbit Digital West in Santa Monica. The company was a subsidiary of start-up Orbit Digital, in New York. Tom partnered with Orbit Digital to give the company a bi-coastal presence and to target the feature film market in Los Angeles. Tom glided into sales, marketing, emerging technologies and a business development role. Within a year the company was a "powerhouse" providing systems to all the major studios and production companies, including: Miramax Films, Revolution Studios, Universal Studios, Sony Pictures and Warner Bros. The company experienced rapid and exponential growth during Tom's time at the company. The company was sold in 2004 to PostWorks; a New York based post-production facility. In 2006, Tom moved back to Lexington, Massachusetts to seek treatment and be close to family while recovering from complications related to a serious mountain biking accident in Malibu, California. In 2009, Tom moved to Martha's Vineyard and began doing freelance creative work. He is a skilled: web and graphic designer, photographer, video producer and musician. During this time he also focused on the trends and technology related to video, internet, social media, marketing and the principles of search engine optimization (SEO). On a final note, Tom's entrepreneurial spirit and experience in building a successful business from the ground up enables him to understand that your success is tied to his own success. He is committed to building long-term, fruitful relationships with his clientele. Expert, no jargon, friendly Ruby Developer with clean, tested code

    United States - Last active: 11/11/2012 - Tests: 3 - Portfolio: 5

For a prettier format of my profile, please see my website: . I will tackle any Ruby tasks that you need. I can write anything from small Ruby scripts to full-blown Web applications. I'm very friendly, easy to talk to, and easy to work with. Whether you are technical or not, I talk in plain English with no jargon so that you know exactly what's going on and how things work. I don't just work FOR you, but WITH you. My code is clean, readable, and regularly refactored. TESTING IS A HIGH PRIORITY IN MY WORK, NOT AN AFTERTHOUGHT. I WILL WORK FOR A LOWER RATE FOR GOOD CAUSES. Efficient and Easy for You For web applications, I use Heroku, a service that allows me to quickly give you a product in a working state so you can immediately interact with it. No work needed on your end. I just give you a web address, and you see results in seconds. Knowledgeable I regularly follow Ruby news and attend conferences, so you can be confident that I am keeping up with technology. Flexibility I can work any day of the week at any reasonable hour of the day. I've had clients across the globe and have had no problems making myself available at a time that is convenient for them. I respond to emails quickly and give plenty of warning if I will not be available. Why Testing Matters There is no such thing as bug-free code. If you were an online bank, how confident are you that every transaction is working like it is designed to? Can you afford to have a bug? With automated tests, you have code that verifies your application is working as expected. Most good programmers nowadays are thoroughly testing their code. It helps with development, and it helps when things go wrong like many things eventually do. Tests will also help you make sure that fixing a bug here won't cause another bug way over there. Not having automated tests makes development SEVERAL TIMES slower, costing more money and more headache. Frameworks, gems, tools, etc. that I use: Ruby on Rails Sinatra Padrino HAML/SASS JavaScript CoffeeScript jQuery Prototyp/Scriptaculous TestUnit RSpec MiniTest Jasmine Capybara Machinist Spork Selenium Formtastic Nokogiri HTTParty Bundler RVM MySQL PostgreSQL MongoDB ActiveRecord Mongoid Devise OmniAuth Heroku Amazon S3 Spreedly
