Digital Artist (Illustration, Animation, Retouching and Sound)
I'm a digital arts generalist, and not ashamed to say so. I've always been interested in sites and sounds and never could discard one in favor of the other. Consequently, they reinforce each other in my work. Sound has taught me timing, key framing, and lots of audio manipulation which has come in handy as my still images come to life in animation.
I've always been an artist, and I've drawing and sculpting since I was a kid. My greatest influences are Art Deco, English New Romanticism, Italian Renaissance, and comic books. My style of cartooning borrows from old 1930's to 50's comics (my uncle had a great collection) like popeye, archie, or little Nemo. I also have a lot of love for the Underground Comics of the 60's: R. Crumb, Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers, and anything done by Ralph Bakshi or Los Bros Hernandez. Don't get me wrong, I love the challenge of realism and study anatomy in my spare time.
The Digital part of arts started for me when my Irish folk band needed posters. I started with GIMP, and got pretty good on my own. Then my band bought a PA system and I was "voluntold" for sound guy duty. So I learned how to run sound, and from there, recording and mixing in Garageband. This, plus a Liberal Arts degree steeped in Business as much as Fine art, got me a position at OMS Photography in 2007.
At OMS I learned Photoshop and Illustrator from production retouchers and photographers who had decades in the business. I barely hung in there, but it was a great if harrowing learning experience. I read all the books at the library, watch tutorials till my eyes bled, and then my managers would teach me how it was really done. I worked product retouching and some lifestyle for Under Armour, Baggallini, Foot Petals, Dear Foam, Reece's, Cintas, Pep Boys, etc. It was a fantastic 5 years.
OMS was also growing a digital video department and I was drafted into being a sound tech. I took my home recording experiments and sound reinforcement experience and recorded and edited audio for small documentaries, in house company explainer videos, P&G events.
After OMS it's been pull-up-by-your-bootstraps time in the wonderful world of freelancing. I've done some retouching since then, working for RG Barry Brands in Columbus, Ohio, but mostly I get calls for illustration and animation. While I was at OMS I studied Zbrush and Blender, readying myself for a move into 3D. Through Upworks I've done video game assets, corporate digital illustrated portraits, animated web banner ads, educational illustrations for kids, sound editing and audio creation for video, poster layouts and all sorts of stuff.
