As a junior communication major at La Salle University with a focus in journalism and public relations, I believe my experience parallels what Down East Magazine is looking for in an intern. Having interned as an Online Marketing Strategist with Dream Local Digital last summer, I have gained a great deal of experience in public relations and writing. As an intern, I worked researching and writing for the social media pages Dream Local put together for their clients, and also pitched a strategic plan to better promote Dream Local Digital, which is a new company that is trying to expand globally.
In addition to my work at Dream Local Digital, my required communication courses, such as Fundamentals of Journalism, Public Relations Writing, and Principles of Public Relations have helped me develop strong writing and communication skills through presentations and constant practice of research and writing. These communication skills have lead me to become involved in the La Salle Collegian newspaper, and also work at the La Salle University Student Phonathon, where I communicate with alumni and parents over the phone in hopes of persuading them to donate to La Salle University’s annual fund. I have recently written voluntarily for WHYY’s website newsworks.org, creating feature stories about La Salle University’s Men’s Basketball program making it to the NCAA tournament this year.
However, these experiences are not the only reasons why I believe I am an excellent fit as an intern at Down East Magazine. I am also a Division I student-athlete, competing on the Women’s Swimming and Diving team at La Salle. I have learned to balance a 20-hour swim schedule with a job on campus, other extracurricular activities, and my course work. I am truly driven in swimming, and have been passionate about the sport since I was five-years-old. My work ethic and dedication is an aspect of myself that I have taken away from the swimming pool and develop into my everyday life. This past semester, I was able to obtain a 3.93 GPA. I am truly committed to everything I do; as an intern I would be committed and eager to learn and gain more experience toward my career through an internship.
I have developed a lot of interest in sociology/anthropology and intercultural communication. I hope to be able to do research and work in these fields as a writer, and become an expert.
