Writer | Researcher | Entrepreneur Hacking the Future of Business

    United States - Last active: 07/20/2014 - Tests: 2

I am a writer, researcher, and entrepreneur hacking the future of business. I write dense reports for entrepreneurs and executives who want to disrupt traditional industries and gain key insights to the shifts of culture and business. I've spent the last decade studying the movements and transformation of ideas, culture, and society. What is "modern business design"? Most companies have responded to the radical cultural and economic shifts of the last decade by getting a Facebook page or a corporate Twitter account. At a growing rate, they're realizing this isn't enough. Their sales are down or flat, their talent acquisition and (especially) retention is low, and often their industry as a whole is suffering. They know they have to change something, but they can't put their finger on it. And they're certainly not willing to bet their company on it. With a decade of research and experience, I'm helping these companies go back to the drawing board, reconsider their overall business goals and structure, and create actionable adjustments to set the course of their company on the upstream in their market. It's not operations consulting, business coaching, or social media strategy. It's business design--based on a modern value-system, a modern mindset, and a modern global economy. I've been involved in a variety of projects across multiple industries. While my main work is currently focused on modern business design, I have the skills, experience, and resources to effectively help entrepreneurs and companies with the following: Writing, Proofreading, Editing, Market Research, Marketing Strategy, Social media strategy, startup consulting, corporate culture initiatives, innovation workshops, strategic planning, process improvement, Technology strategy consulting and CIO services, and WAN (wide area network) planning and consulting. While these may seem quite diverse, I've had hands-on experience and demonstrable results with each as a graduate student, teacher, a fortune 5000 employee, and an entrepreneur. For those looking for specific interests and passions, here are some of mine: entrepreneurship, startup communities, futurist, technology, alternative health, homeopathy/oriental medicine, raw food, spirituality, philosophy, theology, nature, positive parenting (my daughter is currently 3), social change, politics of business & enterprise, economics, and education.

I value intellectual honesty, equanimity and dispassionate discourse, diversity of perspective, creative collaboration, scientific inquiry, and a healthy, nuanced sense of humor. I value people, not organizations. I draw a lot of diagrams and carry a notebook and whiteboard wherever I go. Given a pot of coffee, or a few pints, and a lot of markers, I'll talk shop for hours. I recently took up juggling just so I can think faster. Incidentally, it's also fun. Some wordier information follows. Since entering networking in 2004, I've had the good fortune of being given unfettered access to a smorgasbord of technologies from numerous vendors in a wide variety of implementations. The gestalt of this practical experience is enhanced pattern recognition, which has proven invaluable when encountering new technologies and unfamiliar systems. I've also developed a fairly unhealthy relationship with the Internet, and for all her vexing inconsistencies and mind-boggling architectural flaws, I always run right back. BGP had me at "Open." I strive always to distill recursive complexity from seemingly inextricable intricacy, reducing special cases to degenerate ones (though, in the wild, an 80% solution is often quite good). I prefer primary research and the considered development of new processes and best practices to the repetitive application of existing ones, and this drives me to automate the tedious bits wherever possible. I'm always in search of new and interesting problems--and new methods with which to solve them. To that end, I spend a great deal of time writing code and studying mathematics, all the while finding new applications to ground the theory. If I stumble upon a particularly recalcitrant problem, I teach everyone I see about it until some vital insight reveals itself or I find someone to instead teach me.

Detailed-Oriented Professional - Strong Skills in Writing and MS Excel

    United States - Last active: 2 months ago - Tests: 8 - Portfolio: 2

With recent legal training and seven years' work experience in a small-business accounting office, I have learned and acquired the skill of completing detailed, accurate work within set deadlines. Remembering the little things as well as the big picture is essential to good writing and to designing financial spreadsheets. Concise, persuasive, and well-edited writing was a strong focus in my law-school studies. (I recently graduated from law school and am licensed to practice law in California and the State of Washington.) I'm eager to assist writers in any facet of document editing—from proofreading, to style critique, to content review. And don't worry, I won't introduce "legalese"; I believe that simple, clear, direct content is best. The important thing is for your message to be heard. In the seven years I worked as a bookkeeper for hospitality and real-estate-development enterprises, I gained considerable skill with Microsoft Excel spreadsheets. I succeeded in providing my employer with spreadsheets that automated many aspects of our data entry and accounting calculations. (See my portfolio for a sample of my work.) Most of those projects involved importing and exporting data between Excel and our accounting software. Most also required me to create fairly complex macros, so I have some knowledge of VBA code. Using Excel features such as conditional formatting, data validation, conditional macros, and worksheet protection, I was able to design applications that could be safely and easily used by employees who were unfamiliar with Excel. My bookkeeping work also gave me experience in high-volume data entry and financial reconciliations. Being able to quickly enter data without errors was one of my strong points.
