During my 20+ years of experience, I've gone through several different IT roles: developer, analyst, database designer, database admin, systems administrator, network designer, team leader, architect, CTO. This background allows me to understand all aspects involved in application development, being able to design a complex multi platform app from the ground up as well as help troubleshooting an existing app's problems or weird system behaviour.

    Spain - Last active: 17 hours ago - Tests: 7 - Portfolio: 3

I'm an expert in GNU/Linux systems and other UNIX flavors. I have experience in CDN deployment, Cloud Computing, High Availability, Monitoring and Video Transcoding and Streaming. I've been working with GNU/Linux since I was 14, what makes more than 10 years of experience so I have a good background in its evolution, tools and administration. I also use to implement tools in shell script and python and I use to code my applications in python. In the last 6 years I've been working as systems administrator and Integrator for an IPTV company that offers streaming and web services. I directed projects regarding software distribution and upgrades automatization, product deployment architecture design and products monitorization. I co-designed and co-deployed the cloud computing platform for the company, its CDN with High Availability, its telephony system and other projects. I really like to learn new technologies, test its capabilities and see what can they do. I like to meet new people, work with them and share knowledge and opinions.

I have strong background in UNIX/Linux software development, Master's Degree in Computer Science. I worked on Enterprise high-load distributed hosting automation systems as a Team Leader (3.5 years in SWsoft, Inc., now called Parallels). For the last 6 years I'm running my own small software development business in Russia with primary focus on Python/Django apps. Not pure Web but often involving integration with hardware (Proximity Cards, Sensor Screens) or external systems like Payment Processing, SMS Gateways, GABRIEL (Airline Reservation System), etc. I can take an idea and turn it into a working business, through all the intermediate stages. Also I have experience of investing my own funds in my projects, so I feel the difference between "perfect code" in a month and "good enough" code that increases the revenue right now. Nevertheless, my code is very good: no copy-paste, always written with performance, flexibility and security in mind, etc. On oDesk I'm looking for (and actually find :) interesting projects with a sight on long-term fruitful cooperation. I'm also open to smaller activities (e.g., consulting) where my knowledge can be helpful.

Fullstack developer with inclination towards non trivial problems

    Poland - Last active: 4 days ago - Tests: 9 - Portfolio: 1

I am a wizard. Seriously. I use rare combination of talent, skills and hard earned knowledge and experience to solve others' unsolvable problems. Wonders and miracles done immediately, impossible stuff with minor delay. Upwork is an opportunity to learn more, faster, and get myself involved in much more interesting, diverse projects that I would thought possible previously. Such cases were, for example, helping Panama based company OSOP with systems they use to predict (and provide warnings for) earthquakes in mid-America region; or a web crawling problem that was neglected by everyone passing through the Chegg Courserank project (creating the general solution for this took me to senior engineer position... and further, to team management); lately I was able to provide candidate and code reviews and design basic specifications for entirely novel software - and surely, such contracts showed up as well. You can see some of my previous private/hobby projects on github: http://github.com/zencodism ... and some social programmer activity at stackexchange sites under the same 'zencodism' login. So far, I've created numerous utilities and scripts (C / C++ / Python), a complex image manipulation and postproduction suite (C++ / asm / CUDA, worked on this as a member of a team), some visualisation software: for custom equipment (Java) and voice emotion recognition (Node.js), and a few web based projects (Python with Django, PHP, Perl, Groovy - working with a team on huge CRM system) including also long team Java-based web scraping suite I both developed and managed the team involved. Further down the road I'm turning to web applications along with their server counterparts - everything from designing communication protocols with cryptography and some redundancy to a space simulation game I'm writing as a hobby. I can work in and administer various operating systems (Windows, Linux, *BSD, Solaris... this came in handy lately when web development job turned into disaster recovery of remote server), use several databases (mySQL, PL-SQL) and quite a few programming languages; even created one myself, just for fun. What will be next, may be up to you. Feel invited.

    Web developer

    Russia - Last active: 1 day ago - Tests: 12 - Portfolio: 12

Lately my work is about integrating Bitcoin-related functionality in websites or developing special purpose apps, like a bitcoin trading bot or a websocket chat. It involved various technologies: node.js, websockets, Ruby, Sinatra framework, Blockchain.info API, PayPal API. During the years of my work prior to this I've performed a big variety of tasks in developing and reworking websites. This involved a lot of programming with PHP+MySQL, layout works with HTML+CSS, Javascript (with and without jQuery), AJAX. I had experience working with various CMSs: OpenCart, Joomla!, Wordpress, MODx Revolution, DataLife Engine, SimplaCMS, self-written websites. Also with different frameworks: MODx, Yii, also self-written MVC structures. I also use regular expressions (RegExp) fluently and have quite some experience with that. I've integrated a number of payment systems in several websites, which included PayPal, Bitcoin (native and via Blockchain.info API) and russian WebMoney, Yandex.Money, QIWI, Robokassa. All payment processors utilize mainly same principles, so it's no problem to learn and integrate something new quickly. My work included creation of web grabbers and parsers that process information from external websites, for example to fill up an online store database. Also setting up and administrating Linux/FreeBSD VPS servers: installation and configuration of Apache, PHP, MySQL, Python and some other uncommon software. Aside from pure web, I've developed Python and Ruby scripts for various services. A part of that was developing Bitcoin-related services, including API communication with bitcoind daemon, automated receiving/sending Bitcoin payments, trading on BTC exchanges via their API, and other stuff. I'm looking for interesting work opportunities that would let me develop my skills and acquire new ones. Cryptocurrencies are especially interesting to me, but if it's not the case, no problem. Most likely I can be useful to solve your programming issues, so feel free to contact me.

  10. John Comeau

    John Comeau

expert troubleshooter, generalist developer, tenacious problem solver

    United States - Last active: 9 days ago - Tests: 2 - Portfolio: 1

"Jack of all trades, master of none" is typically said in a derogatory fashion, but I adopt the title gladly, and you will not likely find more than a few dozen generalists worldwide who can match my troubleshooting and problem-solving skills. I've been programming, on and off, for 40 years, if you count my study of BASIC in 1968, 6 years before I actually got my hands on a computer: the DECSystem-10 at Worcester Polytechnic Institute. As a result of working on computers and microcontrollers of various sizes and capabilities over the years, I have learned to get to the basics of a problem, come up with a prototype solution, and refine it to the customer's satisfaction. My methodology, which I found later is used by many successful programmers, is "build one to throw away"... once the code is working, rewrite it from scratch, correcting the false assumptions made in the first attempt, and refactoring to make a clean, maintainable, codebase. My background in both the electrical/electronics side of things plus years of experience reverse-engineering and improving software on dozens of different architectures gives me the rounded background necessary to take on projects which leave specialists lost. I may charge more than most ($100 is my usual rate, but I found it's unrealistic on Odesk), but when you've run up against a brick wall, I can likely find a way over, around, or through it.
