Experienced Developer: I emphasize intuitive design and optimization

#If you consider me for a project, please ask me about completing a test project!
Contact me about what I'm currently working on.
Graphic design was a small hobby of mine since middle school. While in high school and college I worked on small projects that interfaced with the web. After graduating from Duke in Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE), I have worked extensively on all levels of web development, and I have grown to love the field.
TeenAIDS.org highlights some of my best work - I led the work on the design along with writing e-mail friendly newsletter layouts.
I believe my current personal project is my greatest achievement, which I think it is best described as a new form of a social media platform. After intensive research, I settled on using the Pyramid web framework (python) with a Cassandra database server, served by nginx and uwsgi on Linux. The web service is incredibly resource-intensive, so every aspect, from the back end to the security to the front end, has had a heavy emphasis on optimization, especially on the database.
My database design is probably my greatest achievement, in that I have a method to reduce specific query cases from a few minutes per query to standard query-response time, which is usually in the milliseconds for Cassandra.
Experience that I lack but I am currently seeking is launching a site that will be under heavy load (lots of visitors), and more experience with C/C++/C#.
My top 2 strengths as an employee:
1) Working in robotics since high school and ECE has developed an excellent work ethic in me. I am used to hard deadlines, and doing "whatever it takes" to meet those deadlines. In college I often padded my backpack so I could take naps on the lab floor, which saved commute time and ensured I would never oversleep.
2) I hold a lot of respect for every person (with the usual exceptions, of course), and I care about others and their problems. This causes me to be straightforward, honest, diligent, and easy to work with. If I am worried about meeting a deadline, I will not hide the fact, and I will do what I can to make sure the end result is pleasant and fair for everyone.
My top 2 strengths as a programmer and developer:
1) Working with robotics and working in the ECE field has helped me develop rigorous testing and debugging techniques, from the first phases of development. When working on equipment, the tiniest bugs can bring an entire system down - and often there is not an opportunity to rectify the bug after the fact.
2) Every project is different, with specific requirements, and I have the patience and enthusiasm to extensively research each problem beforehand. The best example of this is the design of my project's database - I was able to overcome the hurdles encounter by other programmers from researching their methods, researching how databases work on a low level, and then developing an original solution.
Also note that a lot of time researching is for myself as well as my clients, however, I don't consider it "work". If I did a large amount of research for a client, I might bring up billable research time in a candid discussion, but I do not want to set an expectation that I be bill for all of that time.
My main goals working as a freelancer are to gain experience on new projects
