My Primary Expertise is eCommerce Product Data. Movement , Transformation and automation.
For the past 8 years I have worked with eCommerce Companies in Florida, developing and implementing automated ETL Data Flow solutions.
An ETL system is comprised of three stages.
Extract - For this stage, I create a solution to Pull Raw product data (Download) from it's source, a common source of "raw data" is a Product Data Feed from a Product Vendor or Manufacturer.
This Data may be in the form of bulk product details such as Images,Description,Attributes , or it can be a Daily inventory & cost feed. The formats vary, and can be XML,PDF, CSV, DBF or various other formats.
I primarily use Python to create the Extraction solution.
Transform - During this stage I create a solution to transform the raw data into normalized & clean data which matches the specifications of the clients eCommerce catalog, or other channels such as eBay or Amazon.
I create the transformation solution using a combination of T-SQL inside of SQL Server along with the Pandas ETL module inside of Python, occasionally I'll use Powershell or SSIS tools here.
Load - In this final stage, I create a solution that loads (Imports) the transformed Data into the Final target destination such as the product catalog of a Magento website. This is accomplished by means of an API link or an FTP server upload.
The primary tool that I use to create the Load Solution is Python.
Once all Three solutions are developed, I combine them all into a single Python program which can be scheduled Daily or at any regular interval, it can also be executed manually by a User. The solution is seamless and automated once complete.
I have created numerous ETL solutions for eCommerce companies over the past 8 years.
The solutions that I have created have all lead to Short & Long Term Increased revenue , as well as decreased overhead in the form of Manual Labor.
Many of my Clients were using Excel as a Product database, and upload method. Excel is a great tool for simple data organization, however when an eCommerce operation wishes to offer 100's or 1,000's of Products, they are seriously handicapped by using Excel.
These clients, have often been intimidated by SQL Databases and programming languages such as Python. A partial reason for this is something called, "F.U.D" or Fear - Uncertainty - Doubt.
Many developers do not seek to help a Client understand technical concepts, rather the Developer tries to make the Technical solution sound extremely complex and intimidating. This is a Sales technique, that the Developer relies on so that he can charge inordinately high amounts for Development work.
Because of this distasteful strategy, I have made it a Personal Priority to dispel these false notions, and help my Clients or potential clients, genuinely understand the concept and strategy behind ETL solutions. Even if a client does not sign me to a contract, I gain satisfaction from giving Good Advice, which may help a Client become more successful... It's not All about the Money for me.
Beyond being the right thing to do, I have found that Explaining technical concepts, in simple non technical ways.. Leads to much better communication, this in Turn results in a superior final solution.. If a Client, has no idea what I'm talking about, it is very difficult for him, to provide valuable feedback and vital details about his Company, & it's data operations. Seamless communication on both ends, is a Top Priority for me.
I had a contract with an Auto Accessories company in Orlando which sells Products on eBay,Amazon and their own website. Due to the the challenges that exist around fitment details in the Auto Accessories category. This client had hit a Brick wall, in regards to sales growth.
A few weeks after I started, the owner invited me to lunch, and explained to me "Clint - I need for you to increase our Amazon Sales." A great challenge this was. The first thing I did (As I always do.) was start asking questions.. Everyone in the organization.. From the Warehouse manager to the CEO. By communicating with everyone, I determined where the primary issue was.. The Issue holding them back involved their Data management and storage strategy.. Quite simply everyone was doing their own thing with their own data and no one was collaborating, or on the same page.
I implemented a system which completely stream lined their back end Data Management, I combined all of their disparate data sources into One. This allowed me to create new Amazon product listings, which took advantage of the Amazon ACES fitment system.
As a result of Solid two way communication, company wide I developed a Solution, resulting in a Six-Fold Sales increase on Amazon, and a Superior Company wide method of handling product data.
