    VB6/VB.Net Outlook 2003/7/10 and MSOffice Programmer/Project Manager

    United Kingdom - Last active: 15 hours ago - Tests: 5 - Portfolio: 6

I have been writing systems in various forms of Basic since 1983 the first 3 years were full time after which I moved into IT Management both general and Project. In the last 8 years I have resumed my programming activities culminating in the design and build of a full ERP system incorporating the MS Office engines for Word, Excel, and Outlook with MS Access for databases and running on the Windows platform. This is fully scaleable from a laptop to a multi location, multi organisation network. Since working with Odesk I have been doing projects to provide applications in Access and Outlook and have Project Managed a Web 2.0 build for an English University and have been recognised as one of the top 25 software providers on Odesk for July based on feedback. Outside Odesk I work as a freelance programmer, analyst, project manager, or business consultant depending on needs. I have opened two businesses and run them for 10 years and assisted in launching several others including management buyout's. I am a lateral thinker with a great breadth of industry knowledge that can be brought to bear on any systems design and build. With extensive skills in Project Management and Business Process Reengineering I am able to work in many disciplines. Gaining an MBA in March 2010 I am skilled in organisational structure and change supported by IT systems change, having an academic paper published in International Journal of Business, Management, and Social Sciences titled 'Why Information Technology (IT) systems-led organisational Change does not work' see -www.gbmintl.com/research This portfolio of skills gives me considerable knowledge of business processes and roles in many and varied industry sectors that I can bring to bear through a highly empathic approach which means I can offer advice and suggestions where improvement or a better approach can be deployed. During the last 10 years most of the programming work I have been contracted for involves building Apps or Addins for MS Outlook and Exchange, MS Access and Excel conversions and upgrades and also moves to MySQL or SQL Server Despite all of these skills, in this case I am principally looking for Visual Basic Programming or Office Integration work, Windows API work and document management within any business structure or system. Please note: I do NOT do fixed price work in Odesk

20+ years expert SQL database designer preferring MySQL and PHP.

United States - Last active: 1 day ago - Tests: 41

I am one of the top database design specialists on oDesk. My sophisticated hand-crafted database design will save your organization significant time and money. I am a serious professional with over 20 years of experience as a programmer and database specialist. My emphasis has been on creating elegant SQL database design integrated with user-friendly front-end software (desktop and web applications). I have worked mainly as a database designer, programmer and database administrator for bioinformatics, biochemistry, molecular biology, and biomedical research applications. I also have extensive experience programming database-centric software (websites, web applications, desktop applications) for publishing, business, financial, personnel and other purposes. One of the things I enjoy most is creating database schemas which make sense for both programmers and non-programmers, designing with an eye toward flawless data integrity, maximum maintainability and optimal performance. I love crafting websites and web applications which perform with shocking speed. It makes for a better experience for users, developers and administrators. My expertly designed database systems - with well-written queries, intelligently chosen indices, and sensible caching strategies - can easily perform 10 to 100 times faster (using the same underlying hardware). My emphasis when working with clients is on their data and system usability, not specific trends or technologies. But in case you're wondering about some specifics, I strongly believe that the database data should be integrated with but also somewhat independent from a presentation/application layer. Data in the database should be easily accessible from one or many different applications built using one or multiple different technologies. Currently I favor PHP/JavaScript/HTML5 for web applications, RealBasic/Real Studio/Xojo for cross-platform applications [Mac OS X/Windows/Linux], Xcode for Mac OS X-only/iOS applications, Visual Studio for Windows desktop applications. I prefer using MySQL for back-end RDBMS, but I also use Oracle, Microsoft MS SQL Server, PostgreSQL and SQLite on a regular basis. If your data and information organization is already in great shape, and if you are satisfied with how your database-integrated software and website performs, then you probably don't need a high-end expert like me. I can make routine modifications, add to well-crafted existing systems, etc. But so can many other people. But if you're just getting started on a new system that you want done right, or if you suspect your database website programming strategy needs an overhaul, then I can get you on the right track in a short amount of time. * * * * * * * * Let me mention a few of the client-friendly policies and practices I apply with all my clients. I don't do these things to distinguish myself from other contractors. (I would hope they all do the same.) I do these simply because this is how I would want to be treated if I was the client: - I work for zero up-front payment; you can pay me when I'm done. - With fixed-rate contracts, if you don't love what I do for you, you don't need to pay for it. - You don't need to have your own web servers; I can host development and/or live production work on my own high-capacity servers. - I don't mind working on a client's servers, or doing dev work on my servers and transfering finished work to client's servers. - I do not charge clients for hosting their websites or software systems, or for moving their websites or software systems elsewhere. - I provide clients with root log-in access to all the work I do for them; you are welcome to log into the server (cPanel, FTP, and phpMyAdmin) at any time and copy or back-up or move any work I do for you. - If I am working for you, all work product, all source code, all database design belongs to you. Always. Period. - I am happy to work with you and/or other programmers you enlist to work on a project; I am happy to pass off development work. - I do not provide mysterious "black box" solutions. I am happy to have you look under the hood at everything I do. You don't need to know anything at all about the inner workings of a system. Or you're welcome to ask about the most intricate details. - If we're developing a system from scratch, I prefer to do so using very widely-available technologies (PHP/MySQL/JavaScript/HTML5) which you can hire countless other people to work on if you decide to have other developers work on your system. - Do not be embarrassed to ask ANY question! I enjoy working with clients who have zero technical know-how in programming/databases/etc., partially because I appreciate their expertise in OTHER fields (real estate, art, medicine, law, science, civics, etc.) If you already know everything about databases and programming you probably wouldn't need me, would you?

    Software developer

    Norway - Last active: 2 days ago - Tests: 9 - Portfolio: 1

I became fascinated with computers from an early age. At age 13 I started breaking down the software other people had made. I experimented and basically taught myself the mind of computers. I am autodidact in Basic, Turbo Pascal, Delphi. I am familiar with SQL. As for my computer-skills, I have myself developed some of the worlds fastest routines for managing vast amounts of data... I don't think I should go into the subject of all the software I have used and can use on a professional level (you would be stuck here reading for a very long time). I am in addition basically bilingual. Maybe this can be put to work for you. I really enjoy working with different languages.. Translating and transcribing is not only fun, I still come across a few words that I don't know, and that is the fun part of researching and learning.. I can translate these languages in a professional manner: English, Danish and Swedish ---> Norwegian Norwegian, Danish and Swedish ---> English Norwegian, English and Swedish ---> Danish For short texts, I also offer translation like: Norwegian, Danish and English ---> Swedish. German ---> Norwegian, Danish, English and Swedish. I can offer transcription of Norwegian, English and Swedish audiofiles. I would also love to do some German transcription for personal learning purposes.. My german understanding of the spoken language is not bad. (When the Danes start speaking properly, then I can do their language also :D, for now, it is too time-consuming for me.) Phew. That was a lot about language... Where did it all start you might wonder... Well.. It helps being told that you can not do it. (Don't listen to that you parents out there. Recognise your childrens values. Encourage them!) Apart from that, it does help to be stubborn! and travel around a bit is not bad either. Being a software developer is what I really want for my future. Challenges will come my way and I will do whatever I can to meet those challenges in a professional manner. Many old programmers or those taught a language at school see problems and a box they are stuck in. In school I was the one teaching my teachers. I was the one thinking outside the box to get things done. I can be stubborn some times, but in my mind, nothing is impossible. The impossible only takes a little bit longer time. I wish to put my skills into good use and I hope that will be something for you.
