What you get when having a good interaction designer in the team is that your products are not made of standard decisions. Instead, I try to anticipate how the user will really use the product, how he would expect it to work and be organized. Then I can come up with solutions that suit this exact case much better. Work of an interaction designer greatly reduces the risk that the team would develop a feature (or product) which customers won't like and won't use. I follow a design process described in Jesse Garrett's book "Elements of User Experience". At the level of strategy, I discuss business and user goals with the client. Then I use my knowledge of Information Architecture and Interaction Design to determine what features and content the project should have to meet those goals and structure the features and content in a way the user would expect them to be. Then I build an interactive prototype - a set of detailed wireframes of every page, linked to each other and imitating the behavior of the end product. I use Axure for this purpose. When approved, the wireframes should go to a visual designer. This process is much better than putting visual design first and thinking how you should make something eye-catchy, before figuring out how users will interact with it and devising best ways for it to work. It's better that I start my work early on, when there is only a concept. This way I can put your project onto the right track from the beginning. I'm 7 years in web development overall. I have a background in project management, SEO, content management and linguistics.
