    Cartographer

Austria - Last active: 1 month ago

I love to create maps – ever since. Maps are a beautiful and efficient way of communicating about space and spatial issues. I am a cartographer, holding a MSc degree in cartography/geography and currently conducting research for my doctoral thesis in geoinformatics and social geography. For me, maps and cartography are a language like any other. Like any other? No – our maps' sign system is based on societal conventions, pre-cognitive communicative skills and universal meanings. As much as a map is about communication, it has to be beautiful to look at. Humans as deeply visual beings like to be appealed by an attractive display, even if the information behind is what is truly thrilling. I can conceptualise, design, manage, and engineer your (online, offline or both, small, medium or large) map product from data collection to implementation to publicising. In doing so, I prefer to build upon open source solutions, which I like to re-contribute to (an instant karma bonus also for your project). Previous projects of mine include interactive visualisation for research projects in geography, demography and ethnography, cartographic editing for a map publishing house, an interactive, mobile-enabled website for a school atlas, and many smaller online and offline maps. I also taught (and will be teaching in 2016) cartography and GIS lab courses at the University of Vienna. In case I have not yet convinced you to give it a try: Infrequently I write down thoughts I consider worth sharing at chri.stoph.at/blog. I'm looking forward to hearing about your exciting projects!
