United States - Last active: 20 days ago - Tests: 7

I have 25 years of experience as an editor and proofreader, working in both print and digital media. I've held management-level editorial positions at book and magazine publishers, and I was a bylined editorial staff member to the late bestselling author Irving Wallace. I also have a 30-year track record as a freelance writer, with 12 published nonfiction books and 500+ bylined feature articles. I have a proofreader's sharp eye for detail, and I'm well versed in Chicago and AP Style. I can handle a wide variety of editing assignments, from basic proofing to light copy editing to heavy rewrites. My schedule is flexible -- I can work days, nights and weekends as needed. I have a fast, dependable Internet connection, and I'm available to start work immediately. Beyond editing and writing, I have 15 years' experience in Web design and site management. My past Web projects include creating and managing the Virtual University website, and I'm now developing a social network from the ground up at http://social.vu.org -- this project is a work in progress and will launch later this summer. I'm proficient in HTML 5, CSS 3, Javascript, jQuery, PHP, Perl, SEO, and responsive web design. After reviewing my resume, if you feel that I'm a good match for this job, please don't hesitate to contact me. Thanks in advance for your consideration.

I am an NYU graduate with over 5 years of experience developing web applications for large companies of all sizes. I love to build full-featured, elegant and reliable web applications. Having once started a company myself (where I was lead engineer), I am also sensitive to business needs and time constraints of development, and always focus on completing projects efficiently and on-schedule. A hackNY fellow, I had the opportunity to work at Tumblr, where I learned how to scale web applications to handle massive traffic. For companies like Skillshare and Unwind Me I have developed user-facing features ranging from message boards to full e-commerce suites. Fluent in Ruby on Rails, PHP (and related frameworks), Javascript, HTML, CSS, I have the experience, technical and communication skills to transform your project from to an idea to a rich, full-featured, reliable web application. Get in touch to see how my experience can help make your ides a reality!

Expert Video Editor/Animator with Print Media & Web Design experience

    United States - Last active: 3 months ago - Tests: 2 - Portfolio: 1

I'm currently making my way as a multimedia designer, freelance-style. Here's a brief history of me career-wise: I received a BA from Franklin and Marshall College in Neuroscience. I had designs on becoming a doctor. To this end, I completed all coursework toward an MA in Pathophysiology at SUNY-Buffalo, whereupon the plan was to apply to med schools. But I'd gotten a little creative by this point in my life in the way of writing fiction and drawing. By dint of some of these samples, I hung a U-ey, tires screeching and all, and applied to film school. So now I have an MFA in Film and Media Arts from Temple University. After a fair amount of grad-level work in cinematography and 16mm film, I shifted my focus to screenwriting. After a brief foray into the publishing world (satisfying a writing bug is a persistent theme in my life), I parlayed my MFA into a series of gigs in corporate video. Great experiences all. At Bluestone Software, I edited a lot of audio and video, learned some Flash, HTML, CSS and even some OOP fundamentals. Bluestone Software was sold to Hewlett Packard, and they promptly dismantled the once-promising startup. Still, very cool to have witnessed the "dotcom" age firsthand. I scrambled for a couple of years - freelancing as a video editor, teaching screenwriting and film analysis, being a tech for a U-Penn sleep study, etc. I got back into corporate video at Pharmastar. This was a mom and pop shop specializing in the creation of training programs and materials - print and video - for clinical drug trials. Here I did a ton of video editing - medical education kind of stuff -.and had an intro to motion graphics. As Pharmastar grew into United BioSource Corporation(UBC), I grew into a Production Manager and then even Associate Director of the Creative Services Department, where at the apex of the position I managed Translations, Instructional Design and Video Production. And I think I did a decent job of it. I loved and respected the people I managed. Alas, I didn't enjoy the administrative aspects very much and didn't have the right energy for it, not in a corporate setting anyway. So even as I was moving up, I kind of wanted to come back down ... to the making of things, to getting behind a desk and trying shit out- that is, drawing out the artistic from a terrain that might otherwise be kind of dry. I went to film school, after all. Had eschewed the lucrative sciences in favor of writing and drawing. So I asked to step down, which was tough to do. It took a year to find the right time to transition but eventually it did happen, and I am forever thankful for it. Again a lot of video production and video editing. But this time around, I got delved deeper motion graphics - Motion and After Effects. I learned some 2D and 3D animation - After Effects and Blender. Also, I finally patched up a long-neglected absence in my multimedia skillset and learned a good deal of graphic design - Photoshop and Illustrator. These were good times and I learned a lot and produced, shot and edited some useful instructional videos. By now, however, UBC was sold to Medco, who in turn merged with Express Scripts, who found little use for our division and spun us off as Bracket. Business floundered a bit during this time and there was some downsizing... which brings me to where I am now. I have been freelancing ever since, which is great... most of the time. By the way, you can visit my website - www.vivekgahunia.com - to see some samples and learn a little more about me. At this point in time, the website is a work in progress and I will have more samples on there in the coming weeks and months. What I can offer: Video Production - I've produced many shoots, using professional HD cameras. I know how to light a scene, run a set, etc. Video Editing - I am expert in FCP and Premiere, though I work primarily in the latter at this point. Animation - I am expert in AfterEffects and am equipped with some DigiEffects plugins. I am proficient in Edge Animate as well, if you're looking for code-ready animations. Graphic Design - I'm not a hardcore visual artist - i.e. I did not go to art school But I am proficient in the creation of elements in support of animation as well as stand-along print media items. For instance, if you want a newsletter, I can design one for you in InDesign. And smaller items like business cards, postcards, logo creation, I can do that also. Web Design - This is not something I do very much of, but I know HTML, CSS and Javascript. And I am familliar with PHP and MySQL, too. So if you need work along these lines as well, I'm willing to listen. Copywriting/Screenwriting - this is a forte of mine, for sure. If you need any kind of writing or editorial services, I think I'd prove to be of great help to you. Translations - I can coordinate this service for you. In my corporate life, I had founded and managed the Translations department.

  8. Heath Johns

    Heath Johns Agency Contractor

    Full-Stack Developer

    Canada - Last active: 09/21/2012 - Tests: 1

As a developer I have three notable advantages: The first is that I have 17 years of professional development experience. What started as a summer job has become a career that I'm proud of. My trade is in clean, well-documented, efficient, and complete code. The second is in knowing the whole stack. I provision and administer servers; secure networks; code applications, services, websites - I have professional experience from the user experience at the very top to the transistors at the very bottom. Each part works better because I also know how it all fits together, and I can make changes at any level to make sure the job gets done correctly. The third is excellent communication. A big part of my job is making technology understandable to people outside of the field, and I'm a professional. Some examples of my writing can be found here: http://www.oreillynet.com/pub/au/1090#Articles Business objectives and technology are often in different worlds, and I'm here to build as frictionless a bridge as possible. I specialize in Python, Javascript, and C on Unix-like systems - but for almost every technology challenge I can provide, at the very least, good advice or point you in the right direction.
