CTO for hire or Lead Ruby on Rails engineer

    United States - Last active: 22 days ago - Tests: 5 - Portfolio: 5

Quality matters. Communication matters. I'm an expert in both. Over the past 5 years, I've built web applications of exceptional quality using Ruby-on-Rails, MongoDB, PostgreSQL, MySQL and other cutting edge web technologies. I've done "rescue missions" where I've been brought in to fix and upgrade badly written applications. I also have great experience with so-called "green-field" applications -- creating a new application from scratch in collaboration with the stakeholders, other developers and/or business development interests. I'm a senior level engineer. I'm also an experienced lead. I've managed teams of 3-15 developers, including distributed teams across multiple time zones. I'm not an inexpensive developer in terms of hourly rate, but I am very cheap when it comes to value. I've managed the development team for million dollar enterprise projects and I've helped young startups make it to their Series A. If you want CTO-level expertise for your next project, we should talk -- sooner rather than later! Let me help you create something that is sustainable, maintainable and scalable. Some of my clients have included, iCouch, Take the Interview, the Tribeca Film Festival, Paperless Post and many others from larger organizations to small startups. Anything from API development to full-stack web engineering and deployment, I can help. I'm a US citizen with superlative communications skills along with deep experience in web and mobile application best practices. You won't waste time with cultural or linguistic barriers; just think of me as your engineering expert next door. I can work however you want, but my typical workflow uses Trello to organize the project, Github to manage the code and Heroku for extremely fast deployments. For longer duration projects, I'll generally use a Continuous Integration workflow using tools such as Semaphore, Codeship or Travis CI. I measure code quality using various tools, including CodeClimate. It doesn't matter how big or some your project may be, quality is paramount. Following best practices is critical; after all, we want to ensure that future developers won't inherit a mess. I generally use Test Driven Development, although there can be some exceptions depending on the project and the level of my involvement as well as any previous tests (or lack of.) I come from an Extreme Programing (XP) background and generally follow Agile pioneer Ron Jeffries's development philosophies. However, I'm not dogmatic. Every project is different. I'll make some suggestions, but ultimately you, the client make the rules. Of course, if you need help or guidance, I'm happy to help. Most of you will want to hire me to do actual coding and development work. That's the majority of what I do, however, I'm also available as an agile consultant as well. Perhaps you have an existing team that needs some improvement -- I can come in and help. First, I observe and learn about your process (and the personalities,) then I create a recommendation for improvements, including implementation, training or whatever else is needed to get your team on the right track. What every you might need for your next project, I'm here to help. Let's build something together!

Experienced Developer: I emphasize intuitive design and optimization

United States - Last active: 1 month ago - Tests: 3

#If you consider me for a project, please ask me about completing a test project! Contact me about what I'm currently working on. Graphic design was a small hobby of mine since middle school. While in high school and college I worked on small projects that interfaced with the web. After graduating from Duke in Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE), I have worked extensively on all levels of web development, and I have grown to love the field. TeenAIDS.org highlights some of my best work - I led the work on the design along with writing e-mail friendly newsletter layouts. I believe my current personal project is my greatest achievement, which I think it is best described as a new form of a social media platform. After intensive research, I settled on using the Pyramid web framework (python) with a Cassandra database server, served by nginx and uwsgi on Linux. The web service is incredibly resource-intensive, so every aspect, from the back end to the security to the front end, has had a heavy emphasis on optimization, especially on the database. My database design is probably my greatest achievement, in that I have a method to reduce specific query cases from a few minutes per query to standard query-response time, which is usually in the milliseconds for Cassandra. Other experience: Rails/Ruby, Javascript, CSS3/HTML5, sass, SQL/CQL, Django, CodeIgniter, Symphony. Experience that I lack but I am currently seeking is launching a site that will be under heavy load (lots of visitors), and more experience with C/C++/C#. My top 2 strengths as an employee: 1) Working in robotics since high school and ECE has developed an excellent work ethic in me. I am used to hard deadlines, and doing "whatever it takes" to meet those deadlines. In college I often padded my backpack so I could take naps on the lab floor, which saved commute time and ensured I would never oversleep. 2) I hold a lot of respect for every person (with the usual exceptions, of course), and I care about others and their problems. This causes me to be straightforward, honest, diligent, and easy to work with. If I am worried about meeting a deadline, I will not hide the fact, and I will do what I can to make sure the end result is pleasant and fair for everyone. My top 2 strengths as a programmer and developer: 1) Working with robotics and working in the ECE field has helped me develop rigorous testing and debugging techniques, from the first phases of development. When working on equipment, the tiniest bugs can bring an entire system down - and often there is not an opportunity to rectify the bug after the fact. 2) Every project is different, with specific requirements, and I have the patience and enthusiasm to extensively research each problem beforehand. The best example of this is the design of my project's database - I was able to overcome the hurdles encounter by other programmers from researching their methods, researching how databases work on a low level, and then developing an original solution. Also note that a lot of time researching is for myself as well as my clients, however, I don't consider it "work". If I did a large amount of research for a client, I might bring up billable research time in a candid discussion, but I do not want to set an expectation that I be bill for all of that time. My main goals working as a freelancer are to gain experience on new projects

    Ruby programmer and artist

    Netherlands - Last active: 16 days ago - Tests: 1 - Portfolio: 1

I always loved designing and sketching. When I became an engineering student I got myself into computer programming. Then as the highly creative person that I am I tried to make a career as an artist. Out of my creativity came the love back for programming. Parametric design and CNC milling and printing techniques began shaping my interest for the exactness of programming. Now I can also effectively design a web app as well as do many things with computational art. Ruby, Rails and Sinatra are my favorite web-frameworks. As a long term vision I do see myself using my skills in math, computers and design to bring my field of work closer to that of architects, animators and other creatives. I also paint. Most interestingly here about this probably is my perspective drawing talent which could be useful at some point for visualizing ideas. I am truly gifted with this and a quality fineline watercolor sketch could lead to surprising insights for your business.
