    Ruby developer

    United States - Last active: 12/20/2009 - Tests: 7

Ruby has been my main language for a number of years now. I also use Javascript frequently (on the client and server), and Java and Perl when the need arises. I use Ruby on Rails for a number of projects, but a large part of my Ruby work is outside of Rails, as ruby is now my primary language. I have a great deal of SQL experience but have been using noschema databases for most new projects for a couple of years (specifically MongoDB). I have been working in a freelance environment for a number of years, and have a multi-machine linux-based network with constantly running infrastructure suited to tackle any task as it arises. I do a reasonable amount of system administration for my own pleasure or in the cloud for clients, and also run and administer client production deployments myself.

    Brian Dear

CTO for hire or Lead Ruby on Rails engineer

    United States - Last active: 19 days ago - Tests: 5 - Portfolio: 5

Quality matters. Communication matters. I'm an expert in both. Over the past 5 years, I've built web applications of exceptional quality using Ruby-on-Rails, MongoDB, PostgreSQL, MySQL and other cutting edge web technologies. I've done "rescue missions" where I've been brought in to fix and upgrade badly written applications. I also have great experience with so-called "green-field" applications -- creating a new application from scratch in collaboration with the stakeholders, other developers and/or business development interests. I'm a senior level engineer. I'm also an experienced lead. I've managed teams of 3-15 developers, including distributed teams across multiple time zones. I'm not an inexpensive developer in terms of hourly rate, but I am very cheap when it comes to value. I've managed the development team for million dollar enterprise projects and I've helped young startups make it to their Series A. If you want CTO-level expertise for your next project, we should talk -- sooner rather than later! Let me help you create something that is sustainable, maintainable and scalable. Some of my clients have included, iCouch, Take the Interview, the Tribeca Film Festival, Paperless Post and many others from larger organizations to small startups. Anything from API development to full-stack web engineering and deployment, I can help. I'm a US citizen with superlative communications skills along with deep experience in web and mobile application best practices. You won't waste time with cultural or linguistic barriers; just think of me as your engineering expert next door. I can work however you want, but my typical workflow uses Trello to organize the project, Github to manage the code and Heroku for extremely fast deployments. For longer duration projects, I'll generally use a Continuous Integration workflow using tools such as Semaphore, Codeship or Travis CI. I measure code quality using various tools, including CodeClimate. It doesn't matter how big or some your project may be, quality is paramount. Following best practices is critical; after all, we want to ensure that future developers won't inherit a mess. I generally use Test Driven Development, although there can be some exceptions depending on the project and the level of my involvement as well as any previous tests (or lack of.) I come from an Extreme Programing (XP) background and generally follow Agile pioneer Ron Jeffries's development philosophies. However, I'm not dogmatic. Every project is different. I'll make some suggestions, but ultimately you, the client make the rules. Of course, if you need help or guidance, I'm happy to help. Most of you will want to hire me to do actual coding and development work. That's the majority of what I do, however, I'm also available as an agile consultant as well. Perhaps you have an existing team that needs some improvement -- I can come in and help. First, I observe and learn about your process (and the personalities,) then I create a recommendation for improvements, including implementation, training or whatever else is needed to get your team on the right track. What every you might need for your next project, I'm here to help. Let's build something together!

    Ruby on Rails/Sinatra/iOS/JS/jQuery/Autodesk Inventor

United States - Last active: 4 months ago - Portfolio: 1

Hello. My name is Hector, and I am a freelance developer. I have a BS in Chemical Engineering from the University of California, and I have spent the last two years working for an Environmental Consulting company. I have always been fascinated with technology, and I decided to become a web/software developer for two reasons: 1) with software/web applications, you can generally build things faster and for a fraction of the price of other Engineering applications 2) I love to code. My software/web development training includes completing the Tealeaf Academy (Professional level Ruby on Rails Program taught by IBM Engineers), and a Professional Software Development Certificate in Ruby on Rails from the University of Washington in Seattle. I have also learned iOS development through Udacity's nano degree program. I have also completed various CS courses and trainning through Udacity/Coursera and the Treehouse Academy. My Autodesk Inventor training includes a semester long course in college, and applications I have designed at my previous company (see description below). Some applications I have developed include a web based blackjack game using Sinatra/JavaScript/HTML/CSS/jQuery/Ajax, and a Reddit clone using Ruby on Rails/JavaScript/HTML/CSS/jQuery/Ajax. Using RubyMotion I have built a simple iOS app that maps all the locations I have lived in during my life. Another notable Engineering application I have built from scratch is a flow rate meter that measured the air flow through a pipe. I designed a pipe with an orifice plate, and utilized a pressure transducer to measure the pressure drop through the constriction. The pipe was calibrated at various known flow rates and an equation to calculate the flow rate was derived from this data. I then integrated the pressure transducer with a Campbell Scientific datalogger and programmed the data logger to calculate and record the flow rates at 5-min, and 1-hour intervals. I used Autodesk Inventor to design the flow rate meter, and on a separate project, I used Autodesk Inventor to design an air sampling system. Given that I am new to freelancing, I will be keeping my hourly rate low for a short period while I start building a reputation.
