I began my career as a legal intern at Cunningham Swan in Kingston, Canada in 1989 then practiced under senior attorney Doran R. Henderson before founding the Shipowick law office in 1992. My practice included business, insurance, and mortgage litigation, criminal appeals and a variety of administrative tribunal work. In 1997 I transitioned to the Canadian federal government working as a business adviser and tax auditor for ten years for Canada’s IRS called the CRA – Canada Revenue Agency. My audits covered a range of domestic and international tax areas including business income, value added tax, capital gains, international stock option/securities transactions, foreign passive income laws, residency for tax purposes and migration rules. In July 2014 I was admitted to the NY state bar.
I provide in-depth tax research and analysis of complex and perplexing tax issues. As a tax auditor I routinely relied on CCH's tax service, (Wolters Kluwer) in my view the leading tax service but of course the ultimate responsibility for correctly applying the law rests with counsel.
On a personal note, I have an ongoing interest in constitutional law and first amendment freedoms, homeschooling, in education/agriculture integration, sustainable living, health, building, and innovations in transportation, for example, VTOL aircraft.
