    Senior PHP developer and Architect

    Hungary - Last active: 1 month ago - Tests: 1 - Portfolio: 2

I've come a long way already. Started with PHP development as a freelancer which has been interrupted by some SAS, which was a great experience though. After SAS I came back to PHP and tried to learn everything connected to PHP based web development. After years of learning and practicing somehow I became a leader. Not because of a promotion, but basically because of a need and a willing. As I liked doing that too, I dug myself into the leadership "topic" and tried to get out the maximum of it. I never stopped being a programmer though, as I always liked the challenges of designing a high-load and/or a sophisticated system. I was a developer for a long time, after that I "leveled up" to senior developer which introduced a lot of mentoring tasks in my life. After that I became a team leader which introduced much more responsibilities but also the freedom of decisions. That led me to a Chief Architect position where I was responsible for the systems we were developing and the teams worked on the project. In this role I learned a lot about the communication between different teams and departments. I've learned the short and long term consequences of my decisions, but the most important thing it taught me is how to put trust in your middle managers, what can you expect from them. A few areas I worked and I consider myself experienced in: - Designing scalable systems for high load. - Defining and improving the development processes which includes implementation and Quality Assurance as well - Mentoring/Teaching - Technical lead of a project and/or teams - Development. I'm still an enthusiastic developer. A few keywords I'd like to highlight: PHP , HTML, MySQL, MSSQL, Memcached Scalability, CVS, SVN, Mercurial (Hg), Git Jira, Confluence, Scrum

I actually enjoy hunting bugs and exploring unknown code. I can work with your existing code base without being obsessed with refactoring it for weeks first. Over the years I've gained experience in the following areas: ==Manipulation and integration of financial data== Even though almost all records that you need for your accounting are digital now, there is a lot of manual labour involved in actually using them to do your accounting. I’ve created pragmatic solutions to greatly reduce the amount of work involved in entering data. Examples: * extracting order numbers from bank payment records and matching them to invoices * Determining VAT charges from PayPal payment records * Processing PayPal exports to fit standard accounting system formats * Using APIs and conversion to standard importable formats (for e.g. Twinfield) to ease data entry For this I mostly use Python as it is cross platform, provides many tools for data processing and also allows to create a GUI for those that need it. I’ll use https://github.com/michielvv/lazyaccounting as a starting point. ==AWS Cloud consulting== * setting up auto-scaling, load balancing using Amazon Web Services * identify single-point-of-failures * identify things that don’t scale (e.g. usage of local file storage for file uploads) automating deployment Tooling: Fabric, Boto, Chef Performance consulting (Web)applications are usually not developed with a lot of realistic data and traffic from the start. As things grow, it’s easy to run into bottlenecks. These can for example be bottlenecks in resource usage, (website) load time, scalability. To resolve those bottlenecks there are many tools: * Apply in-memory technology such as Redis * Partial loading approaches * De-coupling using queues and background jobs * De-normalization of database tables * Eliminating database queries from loops * Combining memcache/redis requests into batches API optimization: reduce the number of requests to achieve a goal by introducing utility methods and improve the data structure returned on each request ==Development== I like to get involved in all aspects of product development, picking up tasks as needed. I’m currently available for development related projects. To get an idea where I would fit in, I’ve listed the most interesting projects I’ve worked on in the past 10 years. ==Web/Backend Development== * Full-stack development on several SaaS solutions (PHP/JavaScript/CSS) most notably observu.com and picturepush.com * Maintenance and extension of an existing Python backend ( Flask / SQLAlchemy ) ==Operational== * Perl based server monitoring agent for Observu.com * API performance and scalability testing using JMeter * Realistic web performance and scalability testing using Selenium ==Mobile App Development== * Maintenance on an existing HTML5 based cross-platform app (Backbone.js/CSS3/jQuery) * Bug-fixing, maintenance and extension of a native iOS app using Objective C * Bug-fixing, maintenance and extension of native Android app using Java * Bug-fixing, refactoring and extending a Xamarin.forms based cross-platform app In general I am able to quickly pick up existing projects, not only in code but also the client/user requirements. Doing so I can work through design related feedback quickly to get a project closer to a releasable state.

  5. Gerard Marks

    Gerard Marks

    Database Performance Consultant / DBA

Ireland - Last active: 23 days ago

In 2007, Gerard undertook a PhD project in the area of XML database performance. The project was prototype driven which provided Gerard with a deep understanding of core database technologies such as join processing algorithms and indexing functionality. In this time, Gerard became a high performance software developer and an administrator of the leading relational (Oracle, SQL Server, MySQL, PostgreSQL) and XML databases (eXist, MonetDB). In 2010, the technology that Gerard produced during his PhD was introduced to a leading software company in the travel industry. Gerard was challenged with the objective of using his technology to optimise the performance of their hotel search engine. To achieve this goal, Enterprise Ireland awarded Gerard with an Innovation Partnership grant, which was co-funded with the travel company. The project was successful and resulted in a software licence for DCU in 2012. After the success of the Innovation Partnership it quickly became obvious that a sophisticated migration process would be required to get the new technology (that was licenced from DCU) into the production version of the hotel search engine. For this purpose, the travel company hired Gerard as an independent consultant for the first 7 months of 2013. While there, Gerard worked with a number of (agile scrum) software development teams to implement the new technology in two week sprint cycles. In industry, Gerard got a deep understanding of the practicalities of database migration in production systems. As a result, he saw a need to automate the challenging and time consuming tasks within the database migration process. In particular, he realised that the main overhead and risk associated with database migration centred on the need to rewrite existing, functionally correct, application code for the non-functional requirement of performance. Based on the success of the project with the travel company, Enterprise Ireland awarded Gerard a further grant to implement this new database migration product suite. In 2013, Gerard founded the Database Performance and Migration Group in Dublin City University and led an experienced software development team through the implementation of the new database migration product suite. In this time, Gerard became proficient in large scale event processing, query parsing and rewriting, and plugin development. In 2015, Gerard established Optimality Ltd a company that specialises in enhancing and extending the life of software applications with a unique brand of database products and services. Software Developer

United States - Last active: 1 day ago - Portfolio: 1

I have been doing software development for over 25 years and during that time, I have worked on many projects in different industries for a wide range of clients. I have worked on computer games, business software, e-commerce, database apps, mobile phone apps, websites and more. I have built up a core list of clients who continually call me for repeat work. I feel that my greatest strength lies in the process of creating a software solution from start to finish. I enjoy being a part of the requirements analysis process, discussing needs with a client and determining how software technology can be suited to fit those needs. I also enjoy the technical design and implementation phases, seeing a project come together and delivering it to the client in milestones. I maintain clear communication throughout a project, making sure that I am on the same page with the client at all times. I am very honest about my skills and ability to complete a project. I'm not one of those cut-and-paste bidders who tries to bid on as many jobs as possible. I spend a great deal of time weeding through job listings to make sure I'm absolutely qualified for a job before I submit a bid on it. I don't want to waste my time or yours. Thank you for your consideration and I look forward to working with you. Please message me if you have any further questions.
