Bear with me as I tread dangerously close to the line of corny, but the driving force in my own work has always been story-telling. With this, I've used many mediums and hybrids of mediums to create what feels like the right world for that particular narrative to live in. I believe that a visual style can create a harmony and also unexpected disjunctions in work that can push new layers into the content and the overall feeling that a viewer walks away with.
I ventured into animation in 2008 while attending DePaul University. The curriculum, which tends to take a more commercially driven avenue, taught me the ins an outs of Final Cut Pro, After Effects, Pro Tools, and Maya. When I attended School of the Art Institute for my MFA in Film, Video, New Media, and Animation I was able to take this technical skill-set and apply it in a more experimental way in which I could hybridize mediums and use the programs in unexpected ways to create more interesting aesthetics.
For the past year and a half, I’ve been working at SAIC producing videos for the school. These videos range from covering events on campus to shaping short narratives from interviews for the purpose of promoting aspects of the school and it's various departments. My technical job title was “Motion Graphics Designer”, so I would meet with clients and produce motion graphics that would help push the content of each project. Our team was rather small and very collaborative so I was able to take part in every aspect of the process, whether it be story-boarding, shooting, editing, sound design or even just getting the content up and running on the website.
I feel that my mixed background of working in a commercially driven environment and a very experimental environment has given me the best of both worlds when it comes to my work ethic and production. I feel that I know how to work with clients in a way that I can certainly follow a specific style that they are trying to achieve and I am very used to adapting projects based on feedback until we reach the exact vision that the client has. I also think my background has given me the creative edge to brainstorm new ideas for clients if they have a notion of what they are looking for but aren't quite sure what it is yet.
