  1. Mark Shipowick

    Mark Shipowick

    Tax, business and immigration attorney.

    United States - Tests: 1

I began my career as a legal intern at Cunningham Swan in Kingston, Canada in 1989 then practiced under senior attorney Doran R. Henderson before founding the Shipowick law office in 1992. My practice included business, insurance, and mortgage litigation, criminal appeals and a variety of administrative tribunal work. In 1997 I transitioned to the Canadian federal government working as a business adviser and tax auditor for ten years for Canada’s IRS called the CRA – Canada Revenue Agency. My audits covered a range of domestic and international tax areas including business income, value added tax, capital gains, international stock option/securities transactions, foreign passive income laws, residency for tax purposes and migration rules. In July 2014 I was admitted to the NY state bar. I provide in-depth tax research and analysis of complex and perplexing tax issues. As a tax auditor I routinely relied on CCH's tax service, (Wolters Kluwer) in my view the leading tax service but of course the ultimate responsibility for correctly applying the law rests with counsel. On a personal note, I have an ongoing interest in constitutional law and first amendment freedoms, homeschooling, in education/agriculture integration, sustainable living, health, building, and innovations in transportation, for example, VTOL aircraft.

  3. Mary Allen

    Mary Allen

    Juris Doctor

    United States

Above all, I want to be a public servant. Throughout undergrad, I had several wonderful leadership opportunities and I continued to stay involved on campus and within my community as a law student. I discovered my affinity for criminal law during my 1L year of law school, after taking Professor Ray Diamond’s class. The reason I am so passionate about the criminal justice system is because it encompasses everything that I love: Constitutional Law, Civil Rights and Liberties, and Policy Reform. Over the course of my law school career, I have had the unique opportunity to work for both the Office of the Public Defender in Pensacola, Florida, and also for the East Baton Rouge District Attorney’s Office in Southeast Louisiana. During my last semester of law school, I worked as a Student Attorney as part of the LSU Juvenile Defense Clinic. Additionally, I also worked as a research assistant for Professor Darlene Goring, focusing on immigration and elder law issues. Although I really enjoy the practice of criminal law, I have had several wonderful opportunities to work on civil issues as well. During the summer of 2014 while working in Washington, D.C. at the House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs (HVAC), chaired by Rep. Jeff Miller, I was tasked with several intensive research projects, for both the Oversight & Investigation subcommittee and the Disability & Memorial Affairs subcommittee. During the fall semester of my 2L year, I worked for the Louisiana Department of Justice in the Special Litigation Division of the Attorney General’s Office. I went to law school because I have seen too many injustices during my short time on this earth. I am a firm believer in the sanctity of the Constitution because I realize that people all over the world are dying for the same protections that I have already been afforded. Because of this, I have made a vow to myself to be a voice for the voiceless. I want to be an advocate for those who cannot advocate for themselves.

  9. Ana Arraut Colon

    Ana Arraut Colon

    Paralegal/J.D. Graduate

    United States

I recently graduated with my J.D./LLM (France)in international corporate and tax law. In addition to my educational background, I completed diverse internships in international settings to further develop my skills and U.S./E.U. legal knowledge. As a result, I describe myself as a trilingual (Bilingual English/Spanish and Professional French), autonomous, and resourceful individual. Furthermore, I go above and beyond the call of duty to make sure each task is completed accurately and quickly. During my previous internship, I worked closely with attorneys by conducting research on international taxation issues as well as preparing tax compliance documentation for a diverse expat clientele. This experience included drafting client communication in English and French as well as providing synthesised memoranda on specific common law and civil law issues for senior attorneys. My mastery of legal research databases such as Lamy and Dalloz as well as Lexis Nexis and WestlawNext allowed me to provide accurate and concise information for my colleagues on these legal issues. Applying my skills with Microsoft Office suite, I created correspondance models as well as worksheets to organise calculations used for tax returns. I also took the initiative by seeking out my colleagues to acquire more tasks and responsibilities in my department. This proactive spirit led me to proof read several communications by senior attorneys, focused on providing concise explanations of french tax issues for corporate clients based in the United States and in Europe. As a result, my excellent communication skills became an asset during my internship, allowing me to integrate in my department with success. Due to my excellent organisation skills, concise communication and multilingual language skills, my internship provided me a vast comparative understanding of international taxation law while providing excellent service to clients and colleagues. I am eager to leverage my experiences abroad, as well as my educational foundation in U.S. and French legal regimes, and apply them to your firm's needs. I greatly appreciate your consideration of my profile, and I welcome the opportunity to collaborate with you in future proposals.
