Scientific or medical research editor/ writer/ proof reader

United Kingdom - Last active: 1 day ago

Scientific Researcher, academic science writer/ editor: Analytical Chemistry, Natural Chemistry, Environmental Toxicology, Biochemistry. A brief summary of education and experience: -Four years experience as a Research Associate at Kings College London University, -PhD in Environmental Toxicology and Microbiology, -Scientific Editorial Assistant at British Journal of Cancer, -BSc in Medical Biochemistry at Kings College London University. I am hardworking, enthusiastic and reliable. I am highly motivated and take pride in completing tasks to the best of my ability. Detailed outline of education and experience: Research Associate on the Traffic project, Kings College London University: The traffic project is a large multi-institution research project to better understand the health problems caused by air pollution and noise from traffic in London. My responsibility in this project was to determine pollution toxicity and metal content on a daily basis, then to construct an analytical data-set of daily time-series measurements comprising a comprehensive range of pollution metrics. This involved intensive laboratory processing as well as analysis and handling of a meta-database. Research Associate on the Exhale study, Kings College London University: The Exhale study is a project to assess the impact of the London Low Emission Zone (LEZ), introduced as a measure to improve the air quality in London. This study was designed to assess the impact of the LEZ on the respiratory health of school children in East London. My responsibility in this study involved conducting health assessments in 8-9 year-old children, including measurements of respiratory health, biomarkers of exposure to traffic-related air pollution, genetic susceptibility to the effects of air pollution and systemic response to air pollution. As part of this study, we also provided education for the Year 4 class at each school we visited, teaching them about the science and history of air pollution. BBSRC funded PhD Studentship, University of Dundee: I completed a PhD in Environmental Toxicology, within the Division of Molecular Microbiology, investigating the toxicity and occurrence of a naturally occurring aquatic neurotoxin, produced by cyanobacteria (Blue-Green Algae). BMAA is associated with neurodegenerative diseases such as ALS and acts as an excitotoxin by hyper-activating glutamatergic Ca2+ signalling pathways. This provided me with many skills including excellent research experience, independent project management, lateral thinking, multi-tasking, presentation and analytical skills. In addition I achieved a wealth of tertiary level teaching experience; directing practical laboratory demonstration for undergraduate courses, as well as being responsible for the full time supervision of undergraduate and master’s students. I developed very good communication skills, presenting my personal and collaborative research at many international conferences, to a range of medical and scientific disciplines. August 2005 – February 2006 British Journal of Cancer, CRUK Scientific Editorial Assistant • Position included all aspects of assistance for publishing authors and editorial board, allowing me to develop my scientific communication skills and understanding of the peer-reviewed publishing process. • Administrative duties included receipt and recording of manuscripts, proof reading, referencing and organising referees. Selection of scientific publications: Purdie, E.L., Samsudin, S., Eddy, F.B., Codd, G.A. Effects of the cyanobacterial neurotoxin β-N-methylamino-L-alanine on the early-life stage development of zebrafish (Danio rerio). 2009a. Aquatic Toxicology 95 (4), 279-284. Purdie, E.L., Metcalf, J.S., Kashmiri, S., Codd, G.A. Toxicity of the cyanobacterial neurotoxin β-N-methylamino-L-alanine to three aquatic animal species. 2009b. A., Purdie, E., Bryant, J. A., Irvine, L. M. & Codd, G. A. Analysis of microcystins and microcystin genes in 60-170-year-old dried herbarium specimens of cyanobacteria. 2012. Expert writing for the busy entrepreneur

    United States - Last active: 3 days ago - Tests: 2 - Portfolio: 31

You need someone who quickly understands your needs, reviews your materials, asks intelligent questions, understands the answers, and lays out your thoughts and ideas clearly and effectively. You need RESULTS NOW, if not sooner. You don’t have time to educate a generic writer without the background to climb that steep learning curve quickly. “Incredible attention to detail and the ability to thoughtfully lay out complex ideas and concepts into an eBook that will give those with no experience in the subject a primer. Final product was provided ahead of schedule on a busy holiday week. We’re already talking about our next project.” “Opher did an amazing job. Took personal interest and delivered exceptional results. Went above and beyond what was initially agreed, focusing on nothing other than project success. Highly recommended when you want to get things done.” “Another amazing project with Opher! He’s fast, efficient and extremely talented. I'm about to hire him again."

    Creative writer and copywriter

South Africa - Last active: 1 day ago - Tests: 4

I've been writing for over five years, both as a personal means of expression, as well as contracted freelance work. Over that time, I have completed numerous short stories, penned articles for social media and satire blogs and websites, and have written and edited chapters for various authors. Within fiction, which is my main area of focus, I write intense, emotional scenes to great effect, as well as dark humour. I write literary fiction and sci-fi, for the most part, but I also have experience in romance and erotica. Other creative work has included satire, emotional wellness blogging, social media how-to columns, and well-researched, informative articles on a vast range of topics. I am fortunate to have the opportunity this year to study an honours degree in Creative Writing through Wits University, during which I hope to perfect my writing style, as well as gain experience from interaction with and feedback from experts in the South African writing community. In addition to my own creative work, I am skilled at recognising and differentiating good writing from bad. I will utilise these skills to edit, critique and provide expert recommendations to ensure your work meets the high standards required for unqualified success. Within the corporate field, I write engaging copy for businesses and entrepreneurs, which provides information and guidelines, while maintaining the reader's interest and keeping them entertained when appropriate. Over the course of an honors degree in Psychology - including experience with group therapy and trauma counselling - I have gained great insight and perspective into human nature. This is a major strength in my writing. I write realistic characters and bring clarity and insight into stories, whether fiction or non-fiction. Overall, I'll produce work which is of a very high quality, in terms of writing style and content. Thanks for reading!

I have a PhD in biology (Indiana University, 2013) with publications spanning evolutionary ecology, bioinformatics, genomics, and botany. Over the last year, I've become a careful and helpful copyeditor of academic manuscripts in many fields, including agriculture, environmental sciences, psychology, clinical medicine, and foreign policy. 8. Tom McMeekin

    Tom McMeekin

    Multi-Media Journalist, Writer, and Artist

    United States - Last active: 20 days ago - Tests: 4 - Portfolio: 11

I'm a professional multi-media journalist who can write, edit, research, produce, and design high-quality content on almost any topic and for any medium. From creating blog and social media posts to complete marketing communications plans, I have worked with clients including university programs, acupuncturists, chefs, commercial painters, e-commerce sites, news sites and forums, and more. I do not compromise my high ethical standards. Sorry, but I do not accept jobs that involve "ghostwriting" without credit, "spinning" and stealing others' copyrighted work, or other shady practices. What you get with me is a passionate, hard-working, detail-oriented, mass communications expert. What you do not get is someone who will rush the job or be a mindless "yes man" -- if I accept a job then I am committing to give you my best work effort, and that includes sometimes offering suggestions or advice -- getting you the final product you NEED, not just the one you think you want. I generally do not do Skype interviews or meetings for any projects paying less than $1,000. I am happy to answer any questions through ODesk or email, and I am happy to do a trial period for any ongoing positions. Sorry, but the reason I choose to do online freelancing is to make my own schedule and work in my pajamas; if you can't deal with that then best of luck finding someone who is a better fit for you.
