    Researcher and Copy Editor

United Kingdom - Last active: 28 days ago - Tests: 10

A recent PhD graduate from Imperial College, London, I am hoping to establish myself as a freelance researcher, and writer. I am analytical, efficient, creative, and enthusiastic. Curious from an early age, I gained a first class honours in Neuroscience (Glasgow University), spending a year of my time working at the Merck, Sharp & Dohme Neuroscience Research Centre, looking at social interaction as an in vivo model of anhedonia. My final year project looked at mechanisms involved with tadpole metamorphosis, and after I graduated I travelled before returning to study for a masters in Forensic Science. As part of this, I spent three months working in Dublin with the State Pathologist. My project was to examine the efficiency of the toxicology service then in use, which I did by extracting data from coroner's reports to determine how long cases took to process, and whether the involvement of toxicological evidence influenced this. I spent 2 years working as a research technician at a Cancer Research Institute, investigating metastasis in prostate cancer (ERK5 signalling in prostate cancer promotes an invasive phenotype. Ramsey et al., 2011 http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3049582/), before starting my PhD at Imperial College London (under the London Pain Consortium). ...and this year I passed my viva! During my PhD, I presented at numerous overseas conferences (SfN, IASP), and am currently completing two "first author" papers, to be submitted in the next month. I continued working at Imperial College while completing my thesis, and was involved in an IMI cross-laboratory validation project, and a pre-clinical systematic review of pain models with CAMARADES. I am an advocate of the ARRIVE guidelines (http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1877886013000050), and of open access publishing, and attended a workshop during February (2015) looking at the problems of publication bias (e.g. publication of 'positive' findings, and the non-publication of negative/null studies impeding scientific progress). Aside from science, I am a keen photographer (analogue mainly), and produced a low budget feature film last year ("The Ipanema File" / Fighting Badgers - currently in post-production). I am also involved in design, copy, and research for IndieBoogie (www.indieboogie.com), a production platform for indie filmmakers. I cycle, sew, bake, and generally get involved where I can!
