But there are some important guidelines to employ to produce a clean read. I don't just transcribe and type the words. I care about the finished product; therefore, I do my best to make the document as readable and accurate as possible. A good quality transcript begins with a good quality recording. It gives me great pleasure to be able to produce a good quality transcript. I make every effort to hear and understand what is said so as to eliminate as many indiscernible words as possible; but there will be times when I will not be able to do so especially with difficult audio which means background noise, speakers talking over each other, and muffled recordings. To avoid creative transcription or "guessing," those words and phrases will be clearly marked, highlighted, and time stamped for easy editing. If the project calls for a verbatim transcription, every word spoken including the speech disfluencies will be captured. Nonverbal communication such as pauses, laughter, sighing, crying will also be identified. If the project calls for a clean transcript, speech disfluencies such as stutters, verbal ticks, repetitive phrasing, false starts, minimal responses, etc. will be edited out. While minor grammatical edits will be done, I will remain as close to the spoken material as possible. Since the spoken word is more dynamic and immediate, it tends to be less precise. It may contain non-fluency features due to it being spontaneous. When people are speaking, they sometimes start and stop a lot of their sentences while they are trying to think of the best way to say something. Unless verbatim, only incomplete sentences that may add meaning to the transcription in some way will be included. Ellipsis points will be used to indicate interrupted speech, false starts and when a sentence trails off or when a speaker changes thought in mid-sentence; and dashes will be used for added emphasis or to stress a point. Good transcriptionists are able to adapt to different clients' preferences. So should you have any other specifications, please let me know.
