Ex-Yahoo, Expert Freelance Software Engineer
Last active: 12/30/2013
I am a pragmatic engineer with an appreciation for elegant solutions, and a focus on results.
I studied Computer Science at Macquarie University and later Charles Sturt University (Australia), with majors in Network Engineering and Information Systems.
I began my professional career at AOL in 2000, where I was employed for 5+ years in various network operations and software development roles. I was then recruited by Yahoo, where I held increasingly senior roles within the Engineering organisation across a number of different departments including media (news, sport & finance), Search (algorithmic web search, SMB, location and maps), Mobile (apps and web) and Social. I remained at Yahoo for 7 years, until leaving in 2012 to start my own business.
I have extensive experience working on projects of all sizes, ranging from single-member teams working on small websites, to internationally distributed teams across multiple countries, timezones and languages.
I am a motivated self-starter, and also very much enjoy working as part of a team. I have connections with many other professionals in complimentary fields (visual design, project management, css/webdev) and can recommend others for tasks at which I am not skilled (eg. logo design, graphic arts etc..).
I enjoy using software design patterns (MVC, Pub/Sub, Strategy, Builder, Factory, etc..) where appropriate to deliver maintainable, flexible and forward-looking solutions. I observe all practical aspects of the software development life cycle, and can supply all design and planning documents as well as code documentation as part of any project.
Please don't hesitate to reach out if you have a project, I'd be happy to give a realistic quote.
