I also do quite a bit of narrative work for children's enhanced eBooks and you can view and listen to samples of these projects at My normal rate is $50.00 net for one hour of finished voice-over production, which is $55.56 including the oDesk 10% surcharge. The problem is that this rate may seem a bit misleading because actual production time can be as much as 6 times the length of the finished product. Please let me explain. For most oDesk projects, the hourly rate is the amount of time required to produce a finished product or do a certain task, such as writing an article, designing code, customer service or consulting. These sorts of projects are done in one single step from start to finish. However, voice-overs have to be done in multiple steps. The first step in creating a finished voice-over recording is to create the original raw recording. The second step is to finish the recording by editing and properly timing the raw version. This is the most difficult step as it requires much attention to detail and can be extremely time-consuming. The third and final step is to produce the final recording in the required format and upload it to the client. One of the foremost authorities on this subject is ACX, which sets standards for audio books. The ACX guidelines state that final recording rates should be 6x the raw recording rate. I think this is too much. I normally charge 4x because I do this for a living and can do it quickly and more efficiently than most of the competition. In some special cases I will lower this rate to 3x for regular repeat clients whom I have worked with comfortably in the past. Professional and personalized service is my number one priority.
