Experienced developer with applied mathematics background
Last active: 08/04/2013
I have ten years of experience as a full-time software developer, several additional years as a developer part-time while in other technical roles, and an MS in applied math.
Until recently, I was a full-time developer at Microsoft, but I decided to resign because I missed the environment of small companies and freelance work.
My preferred role requires both software engineering skills and a solid math (and possibly science) background; for example, building R&D prototypes, supporting technology transfer, or developing software for use by researchers.
I have quite a bit of experience tackling large, undocumented, over- and under-engineered codebases, and learning them (usually without assistance from the original developers) well enough to make bug fixes, refactor, add new features, and create more robust implementations that perform the same tasks. However, I also have experience designing algorithms, tools and systems from scratch as needed, as well as interacting with end customers to develop requirements and software specifications for new systems.
I am comfortable being “the only programmer and/or tech person” and taking responsibility for making technical decisions when necessary. I can work unsupervised and will teach myself new math, science, or technology topics as needed to complete a job.
