Top-notch Vietnamese localization expert

Brisbane, Australia

*Top-rated oDesk freelancer since 2013* *IELTS 8.5; Higher Degrees in Australia* I am a linguist by training and profession, so linguistic correctness and adaptation is my forte. I have attracted an upscale clientele including several high-profile, industry-leading names. My biggest advantage is a great combination between IT skills and deep knowledge of both English and Vietnamese languages and cultures. Vietnamese is my mother tongue, while my English is at a very advanced level thanks to direct and protracted exposure. Therefore, my deliverables are not just true to the source content, but pleasing to read, as well. Plus, I have always worked with tremendous ... moremeticulousness. With my uncompromising commitment to quality and professionalism, I look forward to long-term relationships with clients through high-quality services at tenably flexible rates. less

Vu and I were working well on this project but he felt he was not being paid enough for the work. He expects to receive $14 for 1000 words. To date I have paid him $100 for 6,900 words and he expressed his dissatisfaction with this. His translations have been accurate so I will give him credit for quality. Avoid this contractor if you want something completed quickly though (within 3 days). Before he accepted this project I told him this project is a work in progress so tasks would be spread out but I needed quick turnaround. Prior to hiring him I specifically asked if he could do 24 hour turn-around and he said he could. Not the case. On average translations took 4-5 days. Quality translators are easy to come by in the freelance world so I'd rather hire someone that appreciates some extra cash flow and being a contributor to this project and getting published recognition. Again, it was good working with him but he crossed a line by extorting me for more money when I was paying him an above average commission.
    Freelancer's Response
I am deeply upset by all the false accusations this client made up against me. I have filed a dispute to oDesk for this client’s abuse and libel action, attaching snapshots of my communication with her as evidence. Here is what oDesk concludes, “we don't tolerate such behavior hence we will take note of this in the client's account and we will be taking further actions should we receive any similar reports in the future”. Granted, oDesk is on my side, but has to let her loose because there is no effective protective mechanism for fixed-price jobs as yet. I am willing to send prospective clients snapshots of my communication with her since starting the job, and with oDesk regarding the dispute to prove that I am the victim here. As per the job description, I was offered $144 for 1,800 words (or $0.08/words, which is fair because the job is about complex aerial and navigational terms and expressions). Then somehow she fooled me into translating much more words, using batches of ill-organized documents so I couldn’t keep track of word count. When I found out, it was almost 7,000 words, sans web-based translations. Therefore, I confronted her and asked if she could consider a pay-pack for the exceeding words. That was not extortion, because I have the right to discuss when the client doesn’t comply with the contract. In response, she ended the contract, starting to spread lies about me, though I tried to be respectful. She said from the beginning, she told me she would need 24-hour turnaround. That is untrue! None of our conversations say anything about 24-hour turnaround, or about intermittent assignments without any plan. For just supposedly 1,800 words, the job went on from August 2014 to January 2015. She often went off the radar, was mostly unresponsive to my inquiries, and then suddenly sent me batches of big files with 3-5 day deadlines. But sometimes I got caught up in other businesses, so I admit I had several delays, yet with due notices. Not to mention, look at the actual number of words she assigned me! I am quite sure I am not the only falling prey to her. Please avoid this fraudulent client, if you don’t want to turn yourself into some sweatshop worker. Again, I am happy to pass along evidence about her wrongdoing (fortunately on oDesk Message Center, and some on Skype).
