Rotating cantilevered rod fatigue testing machine
Ruben completed what I asked of him and selected/specified components to form a simple rotating fatigue testing machine. As a chartered mechanical engineer this was a job I could do myself but due to lack of time on my part I opted to outsource it to a freelance mechanical engineer.
Though Ruben was polite & well intentioned, the work delivered wasn't really up to the standard I required. I wasn't confident that the components he specified would assemble properly or function reliably together as a system. I had to finish off the work myself, do calculations that I expected the freelancer would have done, and change some of the components.
I would have given Ruben the opportunity to address the above issues, but whilst I took some days off over the Xmas holiday Ruben unexpectedly requested payment, I missed the approval request email (being on holiday) and then my payment got released by default.
So on returning from Xmas, I felt it was quicker/easier all round if I just finished the work myself and didn't pursue the payment for the work I felt wasn't fit for purpose (i.e. just take it as a loss & put it down to experience).
