Line editing is where I will go through your manuscript line-by-line to tighten up your sentence structure so that the language is sharp and clear. In line editing, I will look closely at how your word choice and syntax contribute to the tone or emotion of your manuscript, suggest any changes to improve the story, and analyze the manuscript's overall pacing and logical flow. If you are not having your manuscript edited by a developmental editor first (which is highly recommended, especially for first-time authors), then line editing should be your first step in the editorial process.
Copyediting is where I will take a more technical look at your manuscript to correct any grammatical and punctuation mistakes and any issues with syntax. I will also ensure consistency with your spelling, capitalization, and style, such as hyphenation, numerals, and typography. Story consistency is something else I will keep an eye out for during a copyedit to ensure that a character's blue eyes in chapter one do not magically change to brown by chapter ten (unless that is a unique character trait, of course). I will also perform basic fact-checking, which is vital for both nonfiction and historical fiction. Copyediting usually comes after the revisions you make from your line edit.
Proofreading is the final stage in the editorial process and is where I will look for and correct any leftover spelling, grammar, style, typography, formatting, and punctuation mistakes. If your finances allow for it, though, you should definitely have a copyedit performed at the very least before a proofread.
My preferred platform for editing and proofreading is MS Word with the track changes feature turned on; however, I can also work with Google docs if needs must.
Manuscript formatting is where I take your fully edited and proofread manuscript and prepare it for publishing via Amazon KDP, IngramSpark, and the like. I will design the interior pages of your book and create a table of contents. This is where your manuscript becomes a novel! I use Adobe InDesign for page layout and design of your book's interior pages and Adobe Photoshop or Adobe Illustrator to design any desired graphics such as chapter headers and scene breaks. I always provide my authors with a print-ready pdf and a fully functional .epub eBook file with a working, clickable table of contents ready to upload to Amazon KDP, IngramSpark, or the POD company of your choice.
Book cover creation is pretty self-explanatory. I will design and create your paperback and ebook cover using any combination of drawing, digital painting, and photomanipulation using royalty-free, copyright-safe, and fully licensed stock photography. I use Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator to create book covers, depending on your desired cover style. After your cover is completed, I will provide you with a print-ready pdf of the paperback cover and the upload-ready eBook cover in jpg format.
Before I begin creating your book cover, I will need the following information:
- Trim size (the most common sizes for fiction are 5 x 8 and 6 x 9)
- Paper color (fiction novels are traditionally printed on cream-colored paper, whereas nonfiction is often printed on white)
- Your final formatted page count (if you have also hired me to format your book, I will have this information)

If you want your character(s) on the cover, I will send you a selection of stock model photographs to choose the character's base design.
