to the USA with my husband who is an American that lived in Taiwan
for many years, working as an English teacher.
For the last 18 months in Taiwan, I worked as an Art Editor and
Graphic Artist for two monthly magazines, AGRI and HARVEST.
These two magazines are published by the Taiwanese government
through Harvest Publishing and focus on supporting the agricultural
industry in Taiwan. HARVEST has been in publication since 1951
and is the oldest periodical in Taiwan. As one of only two Art
Editors/Graphic Artists at Harvest, I produced 80 to 100 full-page
layouts every month. On top of this, I was regularly tasked with
design projects for outside governmental departments and projects.
I usually had to work 60+ hours a week and extra hours at home to
get my work completed.
My work at Harvest was extremely difficult and demanding, and my
compensation would be shocking to most Americans. However, I am
now very happy that I have this valuable experience as an Art Editor
and Graphic Artist in a fast-paced and high-pressure environment at
a major publication.
Harvest Publishing was my first full-time job focusing on my ‘career
path,’ but in the years before working there (and after graduating
college) I continued to pursue my career focus through freelance
work, often taking on contract jobs for the owners of restaurants and
cafes I was working at. For example, I redesigned the menus of
several restaurants and added English translations with the help of
my husband; I created promotional flyers for musical guests; I took
photographs of food and interiors which were used for marketing
purposes; I collaborated on interior design; I drew attractive menu
boards and designed table-cards; I created bespoke designs and
art used for Facebook posts and profile pictures; I made scores of
Facebook and Instagram posts for marketing purposes at several
different workplaces.
Now, I am so excited and grateful to be able to move to the USA
as a young person with my whole career ahead of me and enough
experience behind to give me the confidence to take on any
challenge. I can’t wait to continue my career in a place where artists
are truly valued and respected, and where there is a real path for
career advancement for a talented and hard-working young woman
like myself.
