Zoho One Architecture and Q&A
This is a difficult review to write. On the one hand, Joshua is very friendly and knowledgeable, and I believe he has a sincere desire to be helpful. I think we'd get along great in a casual setting. On the other hand, we had some serious challenges with communication that wasted time, delayed our project, and made the process of migrating our business systems more stressful. I'm writing this feedback with the intent that it's helpful both to Joshua and to people considering hiring him. First, the good stuff. Joshua is: * More knowledgeable about Zoho products than the Zoho sales engineers. He definitely helped us choose the right path forward. * Friendly and professional in all interactions * Quick to respond to initial inquiries and set up meetings * Able to simplify complex systems into easy rules of thumb However, there were significant challenges: * Communication often lacked specificity. While always polite, responses were frequently vague or non-committal. For example, the question "Is this a good way to do X?" might get the response, "You can do anything in Zoho." I would prefer a more direct answer like "Yes, that's a great way to do X." or "I'd recommend doing X this other way for these reasons." Further questions sometimes helped us get the direct response and sometimes didn't. * There was a notable disconnect between verbal agreements and written follow-through, particularly regarding legal and contractual matters. * Flexibility was limited when it came to adapting to our business needs, especially in terms of standard agreements and NDAs. * The value of ongoing consultation diminished over time, as specific, actionable advice became harder to obtain. * Reliability became an issue, with several cancelled meetings and an unexpected withdrawal from the project when we explored alternative solutions for the part of the work Joshua wouldn't do. An example of the challenges is trying to establish a data security agreement in writing, which is required by agreements we have with our customers. After a few weeks of meetings, my team formalized our verbal agreement in a written agreement. This was basically a boilerplate NDA with a few additional notes specific to this work, and verbally agreed upon. Joshua wouldn't sign it and wouldn't give us any feedback to help find a workable solution, no matter how many times and different ways we asked. He did offer to continue as a consultant (permitted by our legal needs), and we decided to continue working with him while we started trying to do the migration ourselves. During this period, Joshua canceled a number of meetings and refused to consult with the developers he supposedly employs, but he was still helpful and friendly, as always. Working with him still seemed better than Zoho tech support, and we felt we didn't have time to get another team up to speed on our needs, so we continued driving forward. However, when we found another team to do the data migration Joshua wouldn't, he got wind of it and immediately canceled the project, again, with friendly language, but without any room for discussion. The experience of working with Joshua was somewhat paradoxical. While his expertise is evident and his demeanor is always cordial, the practical application of his knowledge to our specific needs was challenging. We spent a considerable amount of time trying to secure clear commitments and specific guidance, which ultimately impacted our project timeline and increased stress levels. For those considering working with Joshua, I would recommend: * Reading Cascadia's legal paperwork . If any part of this doesn't fit your needs, or you need additional agreements, I'd recommend looking elsewhere. * Being prepared to ask very specific questions to get concrete answers.
