Most Beatles recordings - all the early ones - feature MacCartney playing his Höfner Violin bass with flatwound strings and a pick. It's a sound with an unmistakable character. The Epiphone Viola bass I use and love is strung with flatwound strings as well, and is much more versatile and modern sounding than current Höfner models.
I find this bass shines its brightest when played with a pick, but it can also be played with fingers for a more mellow tone, with a softer attack.
