Marketing and Advertising

Good marketing and advertising is like putting yourself on the front cover of a magazine and hoping people will open it. It is important to me to get the picture right and compel the reader to want to know more. I do this by getting to know my clients and find areas that will draw the reader in and help them connect and want to learn about them. It is also important to figure out what makes you stand out from the crowd so that the reader will choose you over the others. I think outside the box and create ways to present ideas and people to do just this.

Speech writing and delivery

I’ve been fortunate to have had the opportunity to write many speeches and deliver them to promote non-profit businesses and a hospital that is dear to my heart. I write to the audience and am sure that they leave with a sense of what the organization’s purpose is and join with that in such a way that they will be generously donating and sharing in the mission of the organization with others. If the listeners are not touched enough to open their wallets, then I have not written a good speech.

Creative writing

I have written since I could hold a pencil. I have learned a bit about writing since then, but the creativity has never left me. I write articles and fiction and non-fiction and continue to expand my knowledge of writing by taking courses and reading and always striving to learn more.

The Magic Owl is my first published children’s picture book released in 2013. The book was created to share a very special story that is well read and is creating a new family tradition to encourage reading for little ones. Book signings and school visits as well as some local fame have been exciting and rewarding. To see children become passionate about books and reading is more of a reward than even completing the work itself.
I am in the process of writing a memoir about my experience with my daughter who has a life threatening illness and Down syndrome. As I write I keep my audience in mind and hope that if I can touch just one life, the work will have been worth it.

The Psychology of Writing

Since my training is in counseling psychology, I learned how to listen well and understand human behavior and what makes people make the choices we do. We are all motivated by certain words and ideas and it is my job to select those words carefully depending on the audience and desire of my clients. I have also enjoyed marketing my own business and see the written word as a way to express our best selves and give others something valuable.

Perfectionism

The desire to deliver a polished, well written, compelling piece of work is like creating a perfect piece of art. It is not only important to have excellent grammar and proof reading skills, but to get in touch with how the reader will perceive the person, company or organization through their writing. I make sure that there are the three key elements in all of my writing: facts, mission, and emotion. I believe that if all of these are presented well the reader will be compelled to want to learn more and will be able to connect with the business or project very easily.

Relationships

Working with my clients on a writing project is probably one of the most rewarding parts of my work. I enjoy getting to know what others want and what makes them unique. This gives me information and helps guide my writing to reflect their best selves and present their businesses in a way that will both please and wow my clients and their customers. I believe the relationships I build with my clients are what set the stage for great work and lasting satisfaction.
