Project details

The biggest mistake writers make is thinking their work is done after writing one draft. Getting feedback from an objective professional can help you see how to improve your work before you release it to the world. Including a professional review of your manuscript in the process of development is an important step in helping you achieve your dream of becoming a popular, published author.

My Reading Critique service is a complete evaluation of your work. Honed over my practice of 30 years, the goal is to look for ways to improve the manuscript and outline those ideas for the author. I read a book twice taking notes on each pass. The first pass is as a reader who has never seen the work before. The second reading is with the eye of a professional editor.

After reading, I compile my notes in a write-up that stresses the qualities of good fiction writing. This includes notes on everything from the plot and characters to the flow of the story and logistics.

The evaluation gives you many points to ponder, from word usage and language to the structure and a high-level view of the work. I also include a sample line-edit directly in the manuscript to emphasize notes in the write-up.

About Richard

Richard L.
Author, Editor & Writing Coach with 30 Years Publishing Experience
89% Job Success
Playa de Gandia, Valencia, Spain - 8:43 pm local time
Richard Lynch is an American author, documentation specialist, development editor (some people call it substantive editing), book doctor, beta reader, and writing coach currently living in eastern Spain. His experience in publishing is extensive, spanning every aspect of writing, editing, production, design, and printing. Non-fiction publications include nine books with major publishers translated into 10 languages and 50 articles in print magazines. His creative prose accounts for 60 more publications in literary venues. He published blogs on a variety of subjects but maintained a concentration on Photoshop, photography, and image editing.

After graduating with an MFA in fiction writing, Richard's career in publishing and education began to blossom. He taught composition at Niagara University, became a reader for a literary agency, and worked for an editorial service. These credentials led to becoming the Senior Editor and Production Manager for a book publisher, a position he held for seven years. Dabbling in web development, photography, freelance editing, and writing led to publishing his first book on Photoshop and photography. Opportunities opened to work for many organizations as a technical writer, consultant, beta tester, and editor. These companies included Adobe, Macmillan, QUE, SYBEX, SAMS, Focal Press, Berrett-Koehler, Adobe Press, Digital Photography Techniques, Computer Buyer's Guide, PCPhoto, and Popular Photography.

As a freelance development editor, Richard worked on thousands of fiction and non-fiction manuscripts including memoirs, essays, computers and technology, humor, horror, science fiction, philosophy, business theory, and software documentation. His mantra is that writing should remain fresh and interesting to the reader. He is an expert at recognizing lulling patterns in writing, problems with logistics, and is sensitive to the writer's voice and their audience. The goal of editing is always to improve a manuscript, but to help improve the craft, content, and process of the author as well.

Experience with desktop publishing and recognition as a tech writer led to a position at a software company as the Communications Manager. The position was a broad umbrella of responsibility for all corporate communications, including compiling documentation, collecting support data, developing and maintaining a knowledge base, and running the users' conference. The position provided a big picture of corporate intelligence and the orchestration of security. Although he had a full-time job, he continued his writing and freelance editing work.

Some of the highlights of Richard's career are listed below in an abbreviated resume.
