The Chicago Manual of Style (CMOS) doesn’t always agree with the Associated Press Stylebook (AP), and AP style doesn’t always agree with academic or scientific styles—in fact, it almost never does. Apostrophes and hyphens are used differently between the New York Times and the Los Angeles Times. Should we even talk about the differences in spelling between American English and British English?
