Shamontiel L. Vaughn, CC, PM5, ACB, was a member of Unity Toastmasters, a community Chicago Toastmasters club. She's held five offices in years' past: President, VP of Education, VP of Membership, VP of Public Relations (two times) and Sergeant at Arms. Shamontiel competed at the division level with a corporate Toastmasters group for the 2018 International Speaking Competition before joining Unity TM. In February 2018, she completed her Competent Communicator certification. In May 2019, she completed Pathways and became Presentation Mastery Proficient. And in December 2019, she earned certification in Advanced Communicator Bronze. In 2019, she spoke to 100+ people at the Toastmasters spring conference. She was also a yearlong co-host (2019) of Do Not Submit Chicago: Rogers Park. Without a shy bone in her body, she loves to hear and tell a good story as well as give a memorable speech. I am a full-time freelancer with 19 years of journalism and editing experience, 16 years of digital editing experience, six years in mid-level management roles, 22 years of administrative experience, and 25 years of social media experience. I've also completed approximately 253 interviews with professional experts in psychology, veganism and vegetarianism, environmentalism, real estate, startups, civil law, pet health, retail marketing, and technology news.
Never one to put all my (cage-free) eggs in one basket, side gigs have taught me as much as full-time employment. For more than two decades, I held a quarterly job with a local credit union. Tasks included filing, faxing, scanning, mail preparation, transcribing meeting minutes and editing their newsletter. I'd still work there if the credit union hadn't merged with a larger corporation. That job taught me a lot about business, money management, taxes and investing. Post-grad school, I was also a two-year switchboard receptionist for a claims management company, which further improved my administrative skills.
Outside of the financial and publishing industry, my volunteer leadership projects included being a two-year condo board president and treasurer, a five-time Toastmasters officer, and a yearlong host of a storytelling club.
