Sheelu is an absolutely horrible personality to work with. I tried to be respectful and fair until the end. I gave her industry-standard feedback. She had broken up words and wrapped to the next line in the middle of the syllable. She also didn’t follow the manuscript exactly. Some areas had issues with spacing. She got angry that fixing these will take manual work. Her anger was so strong that I could feel it. I told her that if she can’t follow these publishing standards then she doesn’t have to do the project. Instead of working through the issue, she immediately quit, as soon as I said this. When I asked for the raw files so I can continue with another designer, she demanded full payment for the project even when she didn’t complete it. I still left her a reasonable review of 2.9. She left me a 1 star and tried to trash me. I tried to negotiate with her. She said that she’d offer the raw files if I deleted my honest review, then went back on her words telling me that she doesn’t want to send the files as that was never a part of the contract agreement. She was horribly rude, insulting, and nasty to deal with. She gets triggered easily and has a huge ego. At first I hired her hourly. She had to copy the cover design concept I sent her. When that took over four hours, I realized that she dilly dallied to bank more hours for more money. I know what it takes to do the task because I’ve done multiple publishing projects. So I set a budget. When I got strict at manage the budget, she got very angry and disgruntled. Later I told her that I got the sense that she targeted me and wanted to scam me by going slow. She never denied it, all two or three times I mentioned that to her. She admitted that she charged $25 for a whole book in the past, yet she accused that she was high value and I didn’t respect her work. She took professional feedback as not respecting her work. So she was trying to scam me. She never denied it. In my initial review, I tried to be reasonable with her by rating her fairly. I’ve spent a whole week trying to get the raw files from her and dealing with her having a power ride by holding the design hostage. I’m done with her and I’m starting over with another designer. She’s a regular designer wanting to be treated like a special celebrity, getting offended at regular project feedback and rebels hard against being managed. Only inexperienced publishers will fall for her tactics.
